The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) employs nearly 1,500 veterans and active military members. The department offers a range of benefits and services to support veterans, their spouses, and their families.
Responsibilities- Prepare background reports on offenders convicted in Circuit Court for sentencing determinations.
- Supervise offenders placed on community supervision through court‑ordered probation or parole.
- Manage a caseload that may include sex offenders, offenders on electronic monitoring devices such as GPS, gender‑specific cases, mentally ill offenders, Interstate Compact cases, and other specialized caseloads designated by the Deputy Director of Field Operations.
- Serve as an embedded agent at local law enforcement agencies, an Institutional Parole Agent, or an Internet Crimes Against Children Agent (ICAC).
- Follow MDOC policies, procedures, Director Office Memorandums (DOM), and Guiding Principles to achieve departmental goals.
- Provide coaching to offenders to address their needs, develop new skills, and promote a prosocial lifestyle that ultimately protects the public.
- Operate in a DART (Drug/Alcohol Test Designated) position, maintaining unsupervised access and direct contact with probationers or parolees as required, with a potential for up to 50% hybrid work based on training needs.
The position may be performed as a hybrid role for up to 50% of the pay period. The selected candidate will receive in‑office training to develop necessary skills.

Possession of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, correctional administration, criminology, psychology, social work, counseling and guidance, child development, sociology, school social work, social work administration, educational psychology, family relations, human services, theology, or a related field.
Experience Levels- Parole/Probation Officer 9 – No specific type or amount of experience required.
- Parole/Probation Officer 10 – One year of professional experience working with adult offenders equivalent to a Parole/Probation Officer 9.
- Parole/Probation Officer P11 – Two years of professional experience with adult offenders, including one year equivalent to a Parole/Probation Officer 10.
- Alternative pathway:
Bachelor’s degree in any major and one year of MDOC experience, or:- One year as an Assistant Resident Unit Supervisor 11 or Corrections Shift Supervisor 11; or
- Two years as a Corrections Field Services Assistant E10, Corrections Medical Unit Officer E10, Corrections Resident Representative E10, Corrections Security Representative E10, Corrections Transportation Officer E10, Resident Unit Officer E10, or Special Alternative Incarceration Officer E10; or
- Three years as a Corrections Medical Officer E9 or Corrections Officer E9.
Employment in the state classified service requires a high degree of loyalty and strict ethical standards. All employees must report any potential conflict of interest and comply with all applicable laws. MDOC may screen out applicants convicted of a felony under Public Act 191 of 2017; such individuals are ineligible until all sentences, including parole or probation, are satisfactorily completed. Certain positions may require a criminal history background check.
