Position: Tobacco Enforcement Section Manager (Regulation Manager 14)
Location: Dimondale

Overview

The Michigan Department of Treasury is recruiting a Tobacco Enforcement Manager to lead the Tobacco Tax Enforcement Section within the Tobacco Enforcement section of the Discovery & Tax Enforcement Division. The position is responsible for managing complex assignments, overseeing field compliance checks, and ensuring enforcement of the Tobacco Product Tax Act (TPTA).

Remote work is available for qualified Michigan residents: three days per week on a flexible/hybrid schedule with on‑site work required two days per week.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise the Tobacco Enforcement Section, managing staff and resources.
• Conduct field compliance checks and enforcement activities statewide.
• Ensure consistency and adherence to policies, procedures, and established guidelines related to the inspection and enforcement of the TPTA.
• Coordinate multi‑tasking complex assignments and project planning and execution.
• Represent the Treasury in public customers and continuous improvement efforts.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in any major.
  • Four years of professional experience in regulation and investigative services equivalent to a Regulation Agent or Regulation Officer, including two years equivalent to a Regulation Agent P11 or Regulation Officer P11, or one year equivalent to a Regulation Agent 12 or Regulation Officer 12.
  • Six years of experience in a law enforcement agency, corporate security setting, or the United States Armed Services providing investigative services as an investigator or sworn detective.

Official transcripts must contain the applicant’s name, college/university name and address, the degree conferred and date granted, coursework completed (especially if no degree granted), the Registrar’s signature and/or seal, and be recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Foreign transcripts:
Applicants who possess a degree from a foreign college or university must have their academic credentials evaluated or converted into U.S. educational equivalents unless the degree has been recognized by CHEA. Evaluations may be obtained from National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE).

Military experience:
For applicants with military service, provide DD214 or other official military documentation that may help identify transferable skills and experience that may qualify in lieu of the required education.

Remote Work and Location

All work must be performed in Michigan. Michigan residents are eligible to work remotely three days per week (Monday, Thursday, and Friday) and are required to work on-site at the assigned official workstation two days per week (Tuesday and Wednesday). Remote work arrangements are subject to management approval and may be adjusted or discontinued at any time.

Background Check

This position requires a fingerprint‑based background check per IRS Publication 1075.
