Summary

This position works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The PCT performs and assists with individual activities of daily living as well as certain treatments for patient care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse according to established policies, procedures and guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Maintains a clean, safe and orderly unit
  • Under direction of the nurse, prioritizes and organizes care of assigned patients, performing basic nurse’s aide skills as outlined in orientation, competencies, policy and procedures.
  • Documents on patient’s chart, any treatments and pertinent observations. Provides report to team on tasks completed.
  • Provides for the age‑specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Emergency care/safety:
    Performs according to procedure in all hospital emergency situations.
  • Provides and ensures a safe and secure environment for the patient.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times while providing excellent customer service.
  • Supports the mission, goals, policies and standards of nursing.
  • Recognizes, supports and implements hospital and unit policies and work rules.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensures

Credential: BLS:
Basic Life Support

Credential: PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification (must hold an internal My Michigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or a current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification, or completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program, or successful completion of one semester of nursing clinical education by an Accredited Registered Nurse Program).

Effective 12/28/2021, Medical Assistants (RMA, CMA, CCMA, etc.) may also be accepted. For current PCTs with an expired CNA, EMT or LPN license, an opportunity to achieve an internal My Michigan Health Patient Care Technician certification will be offered.

Credential: TEAM ADVANCED:
Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (within 6 months of hire or transfer; employees on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete).

Education

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Education Specialization: GENSTUDY

Experience, Training and Skills
  • Knowledge of reading, writing, mathematical, and computer skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels.
  • Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing as required.
  • Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes if required.
  • Must be able to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device and perform job functions as outlined.
  • Overall vision and hearing required with or without assisted devices.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand or walk for long periods; may require postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance and stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling; may require repetitive movements.
  • Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0‑33% of the workday) lift or carry 11‑20 lbs., frequently (34‑66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and/or walk/stand/push/pull of arm/leg controls.
