This position serves as a technical resource person providing guidance, ongoing education and training to employees of the department, under limited supervision. The role provides input into the development of procedures and protocols, ensures compliance, and interprets procedural intent as requested and/or required. It monitors the workflow and staff performance to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures, guides the daily activities of the group to ensure efficient and uninterrupted operations, maintains workflow efficiency and turnaround expectations, and provides input to evaluate staff performance, which includes performance reviews and disciplinary actions.
Responsibilities
Clinical Laboratory Technical Specialist: Works within the department to analyze and process biological specimens, organize workload and set‑up test procedures. Monitors productivity and workflow patterns to achieve turnaround times in the 90th percentile.Cytology Technical Specialist: Screens, interprets and signs out negative reports for gynecological cytology preparations; processes, screens, and interprets non‑gynecological cytology preparations; assists clinicians with fine‑needle (FNA) biopsies and prepares screens; works within the Cytology and Histology departments to accomplish daily work. Monitors productivity and workflow patterns to achieve turnaround times in the 90th percentile.Histology Technical Specialist: Processes pathology samples by embedding, cutting and immunohistochemical staining. Assists pathologists with frozen and gross duties as needed. Performs all duties listed in the Histotechnologist job description. Works within the Cytology and Histology departments to accomplish daily work. Monitors productivity and workflow patterns to achieve turnaround times in the 90th percentile.Evaluation (20%) evaluates appropriateness of patient and quality control results and enters them into the laboratory information system, strictly following the critical notification policy when results meet stated criteria.Inventory Management (20%) maintains inventory and reorders reagents, stocks shelves, disposes of biohazards and chemicals in a safe manner, and maintains and troubleshoots instruments.Technical Resource (20%) serves in matters related to equipment: quality control, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting and inventory; routinely provides input for updates to standard operating procedures; ensures compliance with regulations; provides practical, hands‑on training for new employees and when procedural changes occur.Additional Duties monitors compliance with supply and usage guidelines; maintains departmental inventory of supplies and requests; assists the Manager to improve department performance; provides input for scheduling and staffing needs; may provide leadership in the absence of the Manager; performs other duties as assigned.High Complexity Test Oversight
For High Complexity Tests, this position may serve as a General Supervisor (CLIA Definition). For Moderately Complexity Testing, it may serve as a Technical Consultant (TC) defined in Laboratory Policy, to ensure:
- Remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications; patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system functions properly.
- Orientation is provided to all testing personnel.
- Annual personnel performance evaluations and documentation of testing personnel performance competency.
Certifications and Licensures
Credential: MLT – Medical Lab Technician (ASCP/AMT/AAB).
Equivalent
Experience:
MT/MLT – Medical Technologist/Technician (ASCP). Alternative national laboratory science certification may be accepted for employees hired to My Michigan prior to 01/01/2025 or to an acquired facility prior to integration date. Non‑certified employees must actively pursue an acceptable route to ASCP certification, with time offered directed by the ASCP Board of Certification.
