Medical Lab Scientist/Medical Lab Technician (MLS/MLT) – BSH PRN Variable

Location: BSH Bronson South Haven
Position Type: PRN Variable (Part time, 10 hours weekly)

Responsibilities
  • Perform diagnostic and analytic testing on human specimens to produce sound, reliable data that aids in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients.
  • Operate and perform basic computer programs for documentation and record‑keeping.
  • Participate in all aspects of clinical laboratory testing—pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical.
  • Anticipate and maintain required inventory (supplies, reagents, etc.) to ensure uninterrupted testing.
  • Work within specified time constraints and communicate verbally and in writing at all levels.
  • Follow all laboratory policies and procedures and uphold Bronson’s Standards and Plan for Excellence.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for instrument operation and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting equipment problems and taking action to resolve them.
  • Execute and evaluate quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Document and report results as required by regulatory agencies.
  • Perform, validate, interpret, document, and report laboratory test results as assigned by the department.
  • Conduct internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Identify and resolve problems that may adversely affect results.
  • Assist in training, orienting, and touring new staff and students.
  • Participate in Laboratory Quality Program activities.
  • May be requested to alter start time, shift, department(s), and/or site depending on patient care needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned (e.g., charge tech, competency evaluations).
Qualifications / Education
  • Enrolled in a NAACLS‑accredited Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Lab Science equivalent program for a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university; graduate within 60 days of hire.
  • Completed a NAACLS‑approved program with a bachelor’s degree.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology with a post‑baccalaureate or hospital‑based internship program that requires 90 semester credit hours plus internship.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics with an appropriate internship plus a completed associate’s degree or undergraduate certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology and ASCP, AMT, or equivalent MLS eligibility.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry with an appropriate internship and a completed associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a regionally accredited college/university and ASCP categorical certification/eligibility (BB, C, H, or M).
  • All individuals must have completed certification or be registry eligible and complete certification within one year of hire through ASCP, AMT, or equivalent credential in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology. Newly ASCP certified after January1,2004 or newly AMT certified after January1,2006 must maintain ongoing certification.
  • Foreign‑educated candidates must provide a detailed equivalency evaluation to include a U.S. equivalent degree. No visa sponsorship available.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license and insurability through Bronson’s carrier may be required, depending on duties.
Work Conditions
  • Direct patient contact when collecting or processing specimens.
  • Exposure to noxious fumes, unpleasant noises, and chemicals.
  • Risk of illness and injury from biological materials and organisms.
  • Working irregular hours, including mandatory overtime, holidays, weekends, and on‑call hours.
  • High levels of mental/visual fatigue from interactive, repetitive, or detailed work requiring sustained alertness.
  • Regularly lifting up to 45 pounds; occasionally handling heavier loads or pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving material.
Point of Care – Additional Responsibilities & Requirements
  • Preferred:
    Two years MLS experience.
  • Perform training of non‑lab testing personnel for point‑of‑care testing.
  • Conduct competency assessments of non‑lab personnel and document per regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for point‑of‑care instruments, including operation and preventative maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot point‑of‑care equipment problems and resolve them remotely or in person.
  • Evaluate POC quality control results using quality assurance procedures.
  • Prepare and process external proficiency samples for non‑lab testing personnel in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Manage and support hospital units with supply inventory to ensure uninterrupted testing.
  • Operate middleware program managing point‑of‑care analyzer interfaces, personnel management, and test result management.
