Summary

The ED Tech functions primarily in direct patient care, demonstrating competent clinical practice with a diverse patient population. They work as part of a team focused on patient-centered, timely care in a safe and friendly environment. The tech provides individualized compassionate care to emergency department, observation, and outpatients under the direction of the physician and RN. Responsibilities include performing ancillary roles such as specimen collection, vital signs, EKGs, supply stocking, cleaning, patient transportation, clerical duties, respiratory treatments, and other duties as assigned.

The tech assists nurses, physicians, and team members to deliver relationship-based care while handling sophisticated equipment in a frequently stressful setting.

Responsibilities
  • 40% – Serve as a friendly, customer-oriented team member who maintains a respectful, compassionate, and relationship-based attitude toward patients, families, visitors, and community members.
  • 30% – Follow directions from RN to provide services prescribed by the physician’s authorized plan of care and accepted evidence-based practice within the tech’s scope. Provide direct patient care including minor treatments, answering call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as assigned.
  • 20% – Report effectiveness of treatment plans to the RN and collaborate on updates or revisions, using current information to improve patient care.
  • 10% – Maintain knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines, as well as My Michigan Health and ED-specific policies and procedures, and uphold professional standards.
  • Other duties and responsibilities include:
    • Demonstrating safety awareness and competency in infection prevention and control; complying with safety guidelines, maintaining equipment, identifying unsafe conditions, participating in safety drills, and using lift equipment.
    • Engaging in educational activities, attending education days, pursuing self-education opportunities, and sharing information with co-workers.
    • Collecting vital signs and weight, performing EKGs, intravenous access, and other clinical procedures per policies.
    • Maintaining clean exam rooms, managing supplies, ensuring orderly patient flow, performing cart and equipment cleaning, and operating cardiac monitors.
    • Cooperating with the RN to meet patient care outcomes, communicating problems, maintaining union standards, and participating in quality improvement.
    • Handling clerical duties such as answering telephone calls, entering lab orders, and other administrative tasks.
    • Assisting with medical procedures and minor surgery, demonstrating sterile technique under supervision.
    • Performing emergency care and safety tasks, following emergency procedures, and maintaining a secure environment.
    • Assisting with ordering and stocking supplies, including weekly purchasing, invoices, and pharmacy orders.
    • Maintaining infection control standards and utilizing personal protective equipment as required.
    • Being available for on-call duties per schedule, and performing any other duties assigned.
Qualifications
  • BLS:
    Basic Life Support certification.
  • PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN certification or equivalent state certification. Must hold internal Mid Michigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or current Michigan registry document as a CNA or completed EMT certification.
  • Team Advanced: "Techniques for Effective Aggression Management" – must be completed within 24 months for hires on or before 8/1/2024.
  • Fingerprinting required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with general studies specialization.
  • Equivalent experience for basic certifications within 1 month of hire or transfer.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Ability to wear PPE including latex or substitutes.
  • Mobility throughout the facility with or without assistance.
  • Vision and hearing required with or without aids.
  • Must sit, stand, walk for long periods; perform postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Exposure to blood borne pathogens; compliance with blood borne pathogen and TB testing required.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and maintain reliable attendance.
  • Physical demand: very heavy – lift/carry over 100 lbs 0–33% of day, over 50 lbs 34–66%, and over 20 lbs 67–100%; include push/pull arm/leg movements.
