Description:Emergency Room Technician (ER Tech)

Job Summary
The Emergency Room Technician (ER Tech) provides direct patient care and assists physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in the Emergency Department. The ER Tech performs clinical and non-clinical duties to support efficient patient care, maintain a safe environment, and ensure optimal patient outcomes in a fast-paced emergency setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Assist with patient assessments and monitoring under the direction of a registered nurse or physician.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, weight, oxygen saturation, and other patient measurements.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including mobility, hygiene, and comfort measures.
  • Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs/ECGs).
  • Obtain specimens (urine, blood, throat swabs, etc.) according to facility policies and scope of practice.
  • Assist with wound care, splinting, casting, dressing changes, and other procedures.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, tests, and treatments.

Clinical Support

  • Assist physicians and nurses during emergency procedures and resuscitation efforts.
  • Set up and maintain procedure rooms and treatment areas.
  • Prepare, clean, and sterilize equipment as required.
  • Stock and maintain supplies, ensuring readiness of patient care areas.
  • Transport patients to diagnostic testing areas, inpatient units, or other departments.

Documentation and Communication

  • Accurately document patient information and procedures performed within scope.
  • Communicate patient observations and concerns promptly to nursing staff.
  • Collaborate effectively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

Safety and Quality

  • Follow infection prevention and control practices.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, emergency procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe emergency department environment.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program, Nursing Assistant program, or equivalent healthcare training preferred.

Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • EMT certification preferred.
  • Advanced certifications may be required based on facility needs.

Experience

  • Previous experience in emergency care, patient care, EMS, or hospital settings preferred.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced healthcare environment is beneficial.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic patient care principles and emergency department operations.
  • Ability to recognize changes in patient condition and report findings promptly.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a high-stress environment.
  • Proficiency with medical equipment and electronic health records (EHR).
  • Strong teamwork and customer service skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and move patients throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift and transfer up to 50 pounds or more with assistance as needed.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
  • Ability to respond quickly during emergencies.

Work Environment

  • Hospital Emergency Department.
  • Exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and emergency situations.
