Position: Employee Benefits Attorney
Location: Dimondale

We have an immediate opening for an experienced Employee Benefits Attorney to join our Labor & Employment practice group. In this role, you will partner with clients to design, implement, and communicate effective employee benefit programs, while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This is an opportunity to work in a highly collaborative environment and provide strategic counsel on a wide range of employee benefit matters.

Key

Skills:

  • Expertise in designing, implementing, and administering employee benefit plans under ERISA and the Internal Revenue Code.
  • Strong knowledge of qualified retirement plan structures, including 401(k), defined benefit, and cash balance plans.
  • Ability to advise on executive compensation and nonqualified deferred compensation arrangements (e.g., Section 409A, rabbi trusts, incentive/bonus structures).
  • Previous experience in equity-based and alternative compensation programs, such as ESOPs, phantom stock, stock options, profit-sharing, and Section 457/403(b) plans.
  • Proficiency in counseling clients on fiduciary responsibilities, plan governance, and risk management.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex legal/regulatory requirements into practical, business-focused advice.

Preferred

Skills:

  • Advising employers on the compliance of health and welfare benefit plans (medical, dental, vision, life, disability, cafeteria, wellness, and voluntary benefits).
  • Understanding of health plan regulatory frameworks: ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, MHPAEA, ERISAI, and related DOL/HHS/IRS guidance.
  • Experience drafting and reviewing wrap documents, SPDs, employee communications, and administrative policies for group health and welfare plans.
  • Ability to counsel clients on fiduciary and vendor issues (insurers, TPAs, pharmacy benefit managers, and wellness vendors).
  • Experience supporting corporate transactions (M&A, reorganizations) by conducting due diligence on both retirement and health & welfare benefit plans.
  • Familiarity with compliance audits, investigations, and self-correction programs (IRS, DOL).

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Michigan Bar, or eligibility for admission.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in employee benefits law.
  • Strong knowledge of retirement and compensation plan design, compliance, and administration.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to client service and ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
