Security Operations Technical Specialist

Overview

This position serves as the Security Operations (Sec Ops) expert for all security tools used in the Michigan Security Operations Center (MiSOC). The specialist will lead and implement best practices for supporting MiSOC security tools, concepts, regulatory requirements, standards, hardware, software, networking, operating systems, and automation.

• Recommend best practices and improvements to state-wide security systems.
• Provide routine updates to leadership on progress and status of active events.
• Maintain, advocate, and advance the use of emerging data security technologies.
• Develop and enforce standards and procedures for automated tools.
• Research enterprise security technologies and recommend future system changes and upgrades.
• Direct, evaluate, and validate technical results and initiatives based on current industry research and best practice.

This position is located in Dimondale, MI. Candidates may work a hybrid schedule (remote 3 days per week/office 2 days per week) within Michigan.

Possession of a bachelor’s degree with at least 32 term credits in one or a combination of the following: computer science, data processing, computer information systems, data communications, networking, systems analysis, computer programming, information assurance, IT project management, or mathematics.

Minimum three years of professional experience equivalent to an Information Technology Infrastructure or Programmer/Analyst P11 or one year equivalent to an Information Technology Infrastructure or Programmer/Analyst 12. Alternate qualifications: at least an associate’s degree with 24 term credits in the same fields and at least two years of experience as an application programmer, computer operator, or information technology technician, plus the required IT infrastructure experience.

Alternatively, a high school level education with at least three years of experience as an application programmer, computer operator, or information technology technician and the required IT infrastructure experience.

This position may be eligible for a signing bonus up to $2,500. Up to $1,250 will be paid upon new hire and the remainder upon satisfactory completion of the initial 12‑month probationary period. The bonus does not apply to current state employees. Classifications eligible for the bonus include:
Information Technology Infrastructure Analyst, Information Technology Programmer/Analyst, Information Technology Project Coordinator, Information Technology Project Manager, and Information Technology Specialist.

Candidates selected for this position must complete a Michigan State Police background check, which includes fingerprinting for state and federal criminal background records covering arrests, charges, convictions, and other relevant information.
