Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

The Director of Buildings and Grounds oversees all college facilities operations at Niles and Dowagiac campuses including the supervision of maintenance staff, custodial services, and contractors. This position requires a high level of leadership, confidentiality, and support of all college initiatives.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license
  • Supervisory experience of institutional building and grounds operations.
  • Five to Ten (5-10) years of experience in facilities operations involving electrical, HVAC , plumbing, or other skilled areas
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience in facility operations
Other Information

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assure the efficient and timely operation of college buildings and grounds including HVAC systems, utilities, parking lots and sidewalks
  • Comply with state/federal regulations and maintain facility records including blueprints/floor plans, boiler certifications, CSD
    -1s, backflow testing, elevator inspections, and equipment service agreements
  • Assist architects, contractors and college administration in the supervision of building construction and renovation projects
  • Serve as facilities contact in all emergencies including crisis management, severe weather outcomes, infrastructure failures, or other facility emergencies
  • Maintain all campus utilities, including the use of Building Management Systems for HVAC and lighting
  • Oversee energy conservation campus wide by participating in energy savings upgrades and programs
  • Establish and maintain systematic buildings and grounds inspections and surveys to identify and correct maintenance and repair needs of the college
  • Prepare capital outlay, department annual budget, and departmental master plan
  • Supervise department personnel and manage work schedules and assignments, identifying training needs as appropriate
  • Perform routine staff evaluations and conduct progressive discipline as necessary.
  • Process maintenance requests and oversee departmental processes such as facilities scheduling, key controls, and SDS program
  • Responsible for snowplow scheduling and receiving after hours calls including weekends and holidays
  • Maintain college owned vehicles and equipment
  • Prepare material specifications and order supplies/equipment within budgetary guidelines.
