Job Summary

As a member of the Student Leadership & Involvement team, the Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Involvement provides strong educational, social, and leadership development-oriented co‑curricular experiences that enhance student learning and campus life at Michigan Technological University. The incumbent reports to the Director of Student Leadership & Involvement and manages all aspects of the Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) program, supervising student staff, coordinating large‑scale events, and supporting divisional initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Manage all aspects of the Fraternity and Sorority Life community at Michigan Tech.
  • Advise FSL governing councils and the Order of Omega honor society.
  • Plan and organize educational opportunities for FSL, including retreats, council/chapter transitions, officer training, new member education, and risk prevention/harm reduction.
  • Work with a multi‑department coalition to design and implement evidence‑based hazing prevention strategies.
  • Support and help facilitate community, council, and chapter‑specific events such as recruitment, the FSL Awards, Greek Week, Blood Drive, and Meet the Greeks/Greek end.
  • Maintain contact with FSL officers, advisors, national representatives, alumni, and other stakeholders.
  • Respond appropriately to behavioral, academic, and other issues that arise within the FSL community, offering guidance, submitting appropriate reports, and making referrals.
  • Assist organizations in understanding and adhering to campus policies, serving as conduct advisor when requested.
  • Support students and organizations in connecting to local service opportunities through management of the service platform and Community Service listserv.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate student employees.
  • Act on behalf of the Director in their absence; represent the department’s mission and programs at university‑wide activities and events.
  • Serve as the primary Student Leadership & Involvement contact and resource for assigned Registered Student Organizations (RSOs).
  • Process new RSO requests according to Board of Trustees and Student Leadership & Involvement policies.
  • Maintain RSO records and archives.
  • Regularly review RSO constitutions and by‑laws; advise organizations of needed updates and revisions.
  • Consult with and provide guidance to RSOs on organizational management, recruitment, fundraising, financial management, event planning, leadership development, and university policy.
  • Advise student organizations on risk mitigation to reduce individual, organizational, and institutional risk and liability.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of department‑led events and programs, including Late Night Programming, Tech Traditions, and Husky GOLD.
  • Develop, propose, and manage approved budgets based on data and program requirements.
  • Assist in marketing departmental events and initiatives and maintaining departmental social media accounts.
  • Assist with collecting program data and other evidence to understand student needs, learning, and programmatic outcomes.
  • Engage in policy and procedure development in collaboration with others in the department, division, and institution that prioritizes student success and well‑being.
  • Serve on committees within the department, division, and university.
  • Work evening and weekend hours as appropriate to fulfill job functions.
  • Actively create an inclusive, welcoming, and professional work environment for staff, students, and visitors.
  • Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work; actively engage in university continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Apply safety‑related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
  • Perform other mission‑critical and position‑specific duties as requested based on operational needs.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
Required Experience
  • Two years of experience at a college or university in student activities and/or a related field.
  • One year of experience advising a student organization.
