CITY OF CENTER LINE, MICHIGAN SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

The City of Center Line, Michigan (pop. 8,552), a vibrant and diverse community located in the heart of southern Macomb County, seeks qualified and service-oriented candidates for its Superintendent of Public Works position. Incorporated in 1936, Center Line is a close-knit community known for its strong neighborhoods, responsive municipal Works, convenient location, and commitment to maintaining and improving public infrastructure. Located in the center of one of Michigan's most densely populated regions, Center Line provides residents and businesses with a high level of municipal service while maintaining a strong sense of community.

The Superintendent of Public Works reports to the City Manager and serves as the City's senior public works professional. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, supervising, and evaluating the City's public works operations, including the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, water distribution, sanitary sewer collection, stormwater systems, municipal facilities, parks, grounds, signage, the DPW garage, and the City's fleet and equipment.

The Superintendent oversees a dedicated team of five full-time and six part-time employees, manages departmental operations and contracted services, and works closely with consultants, utility providers, regulatory agencies, residents, and elected officials to ensure the efficient delivery of municipal services.

The City seeks a hands-on leader who values teamwork, accountability, customer service, and practical problem-solving. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a small‑city environment where responsiveness, visibility, and adaptability are essential.

Background and Experience
  • Thorough knowledge of public works operations, municipal infrastructure, and utility systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with residents, elected officials, employees, consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Experience supervising staff, managing daily operations, and administering department budgets.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in Business Administration or related field.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in public works or related operations.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Michigan S-2 drinking water distribution system license within one year of employment.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of management experience in public works or related operations.

The starting salary is anticipated to be $87,000+/- DOQE with a competitive benefits package. Possible flexibility for an exceptionally qualified candidate.
