The Food Technologist works to develop new products and improve existing products designed to meet the needs of consumers and customers. They will have a strong basic understanding of ingredient functionality and can formulate new products based on that knowledge. This person understands and highlights the cause and effect of product/ingredient/process changes and identifies effective solutions. They will work toward reducing variability and ensuring reproducibility of high-quality, high-value products.
They will ensure that research and development of ingredients, formulas, and processes includes robust assessment of the effect of large-scale manufacturing processes, environments, and other variables on product integrity.
- Four-year college degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Chemistry, Cereal Chemistry, Food Engineering, or a related field or equivalent.
- 3+ years of related experience (R&D) in a food manufacturing environment.
- Outstanding scientific/technical skills. Demonstrated ability to translate customer insights and business challenges into technical solutions.
- Required to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
- Demonstrated, current knowledge and expertise in ingredient technology/functionality, food science, and food processing.
- Good understanding of experimental design, the relationship of processing equipment and formulation.
- Lab and food service kitchen equipment operation familiarity. Ability to articulate technical information and reasoning persuasively to senior management audiences.
- Understanding of GMP’s (Good Manufacturing Practices), HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point), AIB, food security regulations, sanitation, kosher requirements, and other appropriate industry and government agency guidelines and regulations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer applications to access information, analyze data and solve problems.
- Strong understanding of mathematical concepts to do daily work, such as algebraic equations, ratio and percent to derive solutions such as cost in use, yield and comparison of food formulations.
- Willingness and ability to travel.
This position is on premises; however, Chelsea Milling Company offers a reasonable work schedule that supports work/life balance. All postings are for positions at the Chelsea, Michigan based “JIFFY” Mix location unless noted otherwise.
