Position Title: Volunteer Mobilization Lead  

Department: Disaster Response Services (DRS)

Reports to: Director, DRS

Location: Byron Center, MI (On-Site)

Status: Full-time, Salaried (36-hour workweek)

Salary Level: K $68,347 - 76,890 USD

PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Volunteer Mobilization Lead provides leadership for strengthening, expanding, and sustaining volunteer engagement across Disaster Response Services (DRS). This role implements volunteer recruitment strategies, engagement systems, training initiatives, partnerships, and volunteer experience improvements that increase organizational capacity for disaster response and long-term recovery efforts.

Working collaboratively with DRS leadership, Program Managers, field teams, churches, volunteers, community partners, and internal stakeholders, this position builds sustainable volunteer mobilization systems, strengthens volunteer leadership pathways, and enhances volunteer participation and retention.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Volunteer Recruitment & Mobilization (30–35%)

  • Implement strategies to recruit, mobilize, and retain volunteers across DRS programming
  • Identify new volunteer pipelines and engagement opportunities including churches, schools, community organizations, and strategic partnerships
  • Partner with DRS Program Managers to identify volunteer needs and align recruitment strategies with operational priorities, deployment requirements, and program objectives.
  • Develop targeted recruitment initiatives to strengthen volunteer diversity, age distribution, and long-term participation
  • Track volunteer engagement trends and recommend strategies to strengthen recruitment and retention outcomes

Volunteer Engagement & Experience (25–30%)

  • Lead initiatives that improve volunteer onboarding, orientation, communication, and overall volunteer experience
  • Coordinate with DRS Program Managers and field staff to ensure volunteer onboarding, training, and engagement activities effectively support field operations and volunteer deployment needs
  • Coordinate volunteer engagement activities that strengthen volunteer connection, belonging, and long-term participation
  • Support development of volunteer leadership pathways and leadership succession strategies
  • Coordinate volunteer recognition initiatives and appreciation activities
  • Develop systems to gather volunteer feedback and incorporate lessons learned into program improvements

Systems Development & Training (20–25%)

  • Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of volunteer management systems, digital onboarding tools, databases, and communication platforms.
  • Coordinate with Program Managers and field teams to develop volunteer training materials, onboarding resources, and learning opportunities that support program implementation and operational requirements
  • Support implementation of new systems and technologies designed to improve volunteer engagement and management
  • Monitor volunteer participation data and support reporting processes related to volunteer engagement outcomes
  • Develop tools and processes that improve efficiency and scalability of volunteer mobilization systems

Community Partnerships & Network Building (15–20%)

  • Build relationships with churches, community organizations, local disaster recovery groups, and strategic partners that strengthen volunteer engagement
  • Support regional engagement initiatives including events, conferences, connection tours, and partnership-building activities
  • Work collaboratively with Program Managers to strengthen local relationships and volunteer engagement opportunities within communities where DRS operates
  • Represent DRS in volunteer engagement forums, networks, and community events when appropriate
  • Support strengthening of community-based disaster response capacity through partnership development
  • Cultivate relationships with key volunteer networks and community stakeholders to expand DRS visibility and volunteer engagement opportunities.
