Adheres to nursing service behavior standards and is responsible for coordination of patient care in the ambulatory outpatient and surgery area. In collaboration with the Manager, OR Supervisor and Pre-op Surgical Services Coordinator, determines and prepares for specific patient needs, develops and updates ambulatory outpatient and surgery policies and procedures and determines and helps to develop patient teaching needs. RN will also assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care regarding surgical patients;
assist with surgical procedures as directed; and function as RN in Surgery, Angio, Radiology and recovery room or outpatient surgery when assigned.
Essential Functions
Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.
Willing and able to demonstrate appropriate core competencies annually or as requested.
Review entire outpatient surgery schedule upon arrival for shift and prepare patient information to assure uninterrupted flow of patients.
Coordinate patient care and caregivers (including self).
Assure that medications (including special medications/antibiotics), supplies and equipment are stocked, ready and available.
Assures quality patient care is provided by maintaining a strong surgical conscious and leading the surgical team in upholding standards.
Admits and discharges patients.
Follows medication administration management policies.
Reviews charts, pre-operatively, to insure completion with required documentation and surgical permit in place.
Confirms scheduled surgical procedure with patient, family, History and Physical, and scheduling sheet.
Reports and discrepancies of planned surgical procedure to surgeon, circulating nurse, and nurse manager.
Reviews all patient labs and tests (pre-operative) and reports any abnormal results to anesthesia and/or surgeon.
Review charts (post procedure and recovery) for completeness and compliance.
Maintains working knowledge of all Phase I and Phase II recovery and discharge requirements for department.
Monitors, assesses, and documents all Phase I and Phase II requirements of patient case appropriately.
Review charges for completeness and accuracy.
Educates patient on surgical procedure, discharge instructions, and assesses patient and family understanding.
Assure required daily, weekly and monthly checks are completed.
Review checklists for accu-check and refrigeration temperatures.
Assure all supplies, including dietary supplies and linen inventory, are maintained.
Communicates special patient/procedure needs to and from surgeons, anesthesia and preoperative staff.
Assist Pre-Op Coordinator with pre-op phone calls, and any other tasks assigned by Pre-Op Coordinator, OR Supervisor and/or Manager.
Acts as the team leader in the operating room and supervises the activities of the surgical technologist to assure the highest standards are maintained and to promote patient safety.
Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and responds appropriately.
Ensures the final time out is taken prior to the start of any surgical procedure and maintains working knowledge of all requirements involved in time out procedure.
Assesses the fire risk level of all patients and includes this during time out prior to surgical procedure.
Identifies patient by using two approved forms of identification.
Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures and all necessary supplies for procedures. Ensures availability of supplies prior to start of procedure. Notifies physician and supervisor of any discrepancies.
Maintains knowledge of various patient positions required for surgery as well as risks and complications. Works with surgeon and anesthesia team to safely position patient for procedure. Able to assess and re-assess position after patient is draped.
Verifies signed and dated pre-op history, physical, is on chart. Pertinent information needed in patient chart and completes circulation pre-op checklist.
Accompanies patient to surgical suite and transfers to OR table.
Provides assistance to anesthesia.
Prepares operative site.
Counts sponges, needles, instruments, and other necessary items before, during and after procedure as necessary.
Assures that sterile technique is maintained at all times.
Functions as patient advocate while patient is under anesthesia.
Accompanies patient to recovery room and gives report.
Ensures debriefing is completed at the end of surgical procedure and includes the review of all patient specimens and proper handling of specimens.
Promotes safety of the entire surgical team by providing safety items such as lead aprons and protective eyewear for team when necessary.
Actively participates to turnover room in a timely fashion. Keeps physician and supervisor informed of problems/needs that require attention to facilitate timely turn over needs. keeps physician, supervisor, and patient informed of delays.
