Nurse Educator, Clinical Nurse Specialist
Job Summary:
Partnership with the Emergency Services Nurse Educator team to facilitate onboarding, orientation, competency assessment, ongoing staff development, and education for nursing team members in the emergency departments across the delivery system. Collaborate with the Nursing Practice and Development Team and the Nurse Education Forum to address needs for professional development. Serve as the point educator for Blodgett and Pennock emergency departments and partner with CHW emergency departments to instruct service line classes and certification courses (TNCC, ENPC, ACLS, PALS).
Using tools of consulting, mentoring, coaching and interprofessional collaboration, the nurse educator facilitates the professional role development and growth of nurses and other healthcare personnel along the continuum from novice to expert.
Functions in the roles of change agent, mentor, facilitator of learning, leader, champion of scientific inquiry, and partner for clinical practice transitions.
Nurse educators are required to obtain their nursing administration or professional/specialty certification within 12 months of assuming the role, or within 12 months of achieving eligibility to sit for the exam if not eligible upon hire.
Essential Functions- Oversee orientation as part of the onboarding process to ensure that new hire/transfer employees have the knowledge and skill to safely practice independently in their role. The educator develops, coordinates, manages, facilitates, conducts, and evaluates orientation programs for nursing and other healthcare personnel.
- Develop, coordinate, manage, facilitate, conduct and evaluate competency programs. The educator collaborates with operational leaders to address deficits in employee knowledge and skills.
- Design and develop educational opportunities to achieve specific outcomes related to identified deficits or opportunities for improvement in knowledge, skills and practice. This may include obtaining continuing education approval.
- Foster interprofessional learning and enable effective collaboration to improve practice outcomes for the nurse and other health care personnel. Function as a mentor, coach, and resource in the development of nursing and other clinical support roles as the employee transitions throughout their career life cycle.
- Apply research, evidence-based practice and quality improvement principles in education, professional role development, orientation, and competency.
- Required:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing - Preferred:
Master’s Degree in Nursing Education or Adult Education - 5 years of relevant clinical experience in the area of focus
- Education and program development experience (preferred)
- State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) upon hire required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA or ARC within 90 days required
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – AHA within 120 days required (Emergency Department, Critical Care, Surgical Services, Endoscopy, Procedural Areas, Cath Lab/ Electrophysiology, Pediatric Sedation)
- Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) – ENA, Big Rapids, Reed City and Grand Rapids Emergency Departments within 1 year required
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – ENA, SHGR Emergency Departments within 1 year required
- Oncology Nursing Certification (ONCC) within 1 year required (Reed City and United Cancer Centers SHGR
- Educator supporting oncology services) - Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – AHA within 90 days required (SHGR - PICU, 7 HDVCH)
