Summary

The Graduate Registered Nurse demonstrates excellent customer service skills in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of My Michigan Health. He/she works under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse preceptor in a collaborative learning environment to successfully transition into clinical practice. The Graduate Nurse Residency Program is an ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) accredited RN Residency program for new graduate nurses.

Responsibilities
  • (25%) Patient Care:
    Provides nursing care under the direction of the RN mentor using the Nursing Process. Prioritizes and organizes delegated patient care assignments. Accountable for all patient care assignments and documentation of all interventions. Performs technical nursing skills as outlined in standards and procedures manual and as described by unit-specific competencies. Engages in reinforcement of patient/family teaching as delegated by the RN mentor.

    Encouraged to be proactive in seeking learning opportunities. Completes orientation. Care planning for the shift with the RN mentor.
  • (25%) Communications:
    Identifies and communicates changes in the patient’s condition to the RN mentor. Demonstrates a positive personal approach and interaction with others.
  • (25%) Unit Responsibilities:
    Maintains clean, safe patient care area. Handles equipment appropriately. Returns equipment to proper place after its use. Asks questions about its use when necessary. Considers cost in using supplies for patient care. Assists with completing patient census correctly.
  • (25%) Personal Responsibilities:
    Demonstrates ability to give care cooperatively with other patient care team members. Actively participates in quality management and continuing education. Updates and maintains knowledge, skills, and competencies related to the area of practice and age(s) of patient population. Presents a clean and neat appearance according to the organizational dress code.

Required Education
  • High School
  • College Student
Experience, Training And Skills
  • Graduate of an RN school of nursing program or currently completing final coursework (e.g., leadership or equivalent). Awaiting RN State Boards; permanent position awarded upon licensure. Must take and pass the RN State Boards within three months of hire or may be separated from the position at the manager's discretion.
  • Technical knowledge, skills, and abilities in:
    Demonstrates ongoing competency in selected psychomotor skills.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

Physical/Mental Requirements And Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Can move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the description.
  • Vision and hearing are necessary, with or without assisted devices.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow My Michigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing requirements.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, attend regularly and predictably, and stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling. May require repetition of these movements regularly or frequently.
  • Physical Demand Level: Medium. Occasionally (0‑33% of the workday) lift or carry 21‑50 lbs.; frequently (34‑66% of the workday) 20 lbs.; or walk/stand/push/pull arm or leg controls constantly (67‑100% or the whole workday) 10 lbs.
