Summary
Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Clinical Supervisor RN position serves as a clinical resource and unit expert for staff. This role links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model.
The Clinical Supervisor RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice.
The Clinical Supervisor RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice, promotes innovation, and incorporates evidence‑based practice and research findings.
Responsibilities(50%) Assesses acuity as a basis for maintaining adequate staffing levels for the designated shift and for the on‑coming shift. Works in collaboration with patient placement to assign appropriate patient placements on the designated shift (admissions and transfers).
(30%) Monitors medical wide activity via reports, rounds, patient acuity, number and type of admissions, and other forms of communication.
(20%) Problem‑solves, evaluates, and decides on courses of action, alerting additional resources as needed. Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates educational programs for orientation, staff development, and continuous growth of all employees within the department. Counsels staff as needed. Maintains lines of communication with peers, subordinates, and superiors.
Other Duties and ResponsibilitiesTakes an active role in regular nursing management meetings to influence the direction of nursing service.
Actively leads/participates in appropriate meetings.
Plans and develops new programs and facility renovation as appropriate.
Participates on or leads nursing service committees as appointed by Vice President (VP) Nursing/Division Manager.
Participates on medical staff committees as appropriate.
Assures compliance with Joint Commission and Michigan Department of Public Health standards and all other regulatory compliance.
Collaborates with physicians, all levels of nursing management, and other departmental personnel to plan coordinated services for patients, including inpatient, outpatient, and general oversight in the absence of the administrative team.

Certifications and Licensures- Credential: BLS – Basic Life Support – Equivalent
Experience:
within 3 months of hire or transfer. - Credential: RN – Registered Nurse – Essential: true.
- Credential: TEAM ADVANCED – Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt – Equivalent
Experience:
within 6 months of hire or transfer (employees in this position on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete this certification). - Credential: NSC – Nursing Specialty Certification – Equivalent
Experience:
specialty nursing certification or advanced nurse certification preferred within 4 years of hire or transfer.
Education:
Associate’s degree (ASSOC). Essential: true.
Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures typically acquired through 2 years of experience in a medical center or similar setting.
Knowledge of nursing leadership typically acquired through 1 year in a medical center or similar setting with involvement in supervision, charge nurse, project implementation, professional development, shared governance, or equivalent.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups, interacting with people at all levels to share ideas and concepts clearly.
Proficiency in Microsoft Windows is required. Further learning opportunities may be offered.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working ConditionsExposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex or appropriate substitutes.
Ability to move freely around the facility with or without an assisted device and perform all job functions as outlined.
Vision and hearing necessary with or without assisted devices.
Frequently required to sit, stand, walk for long periods, with frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens. Must follow My Michigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and maintain regular and predictable attendance.
Dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling, often with repetition.
Physical demand level:
Light. Must occasionally lift or carry 11–20 lbs (0–33% of the workday), frequently 10 lbs or less (34–66% of the workday), and perform push/pull/arm or leg control tasks.
