Purpose

This GIS Assistant is an Ameri Corps position. The participant will fill spatial data gaps, allowing park managers to incorporate GIS products for planning efforts to conserve and restore natural and cultural resources and guide infrastructure development at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Long-term benefits include increased accuracy and efficiency in fulfilling NEPA requirements and natural resource monitoring objectives including enhancements to track change.

Description

of Duties

The SIP participant will support a major visitor use management project at PIRO, the Mosquito Beach and River Area Site Plan. The participant will utilize GIS and GPS tools to map social trails, trail reroutes, natural resource damage, restoration areas, and trail assets to inform management decisions. The participant will also support PIRO trail map consolidation, design digital data collection tools, organize a framework of base layers in the NPS Portal, and map unauthorized access roads in Beaver Basin Wilderness.

Deliverables

Deliverables include:
1) trail and asset geodatabases
2) digital data collection products for long-term natural resource programs
3) rectified legacy aerial photos
4) NPS Portal natural resource framework. A presentation to demonstrate and summarize GIS deliverables will be developed.

Qualifications
  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident
  • High school diploma or equivalent; or agrees to obtain one prior to using the education award
  • Agree to provide information to establish eligibility and complete required background checks
  • Must be available to participate for the full 26 weeks
Preferred Qualifications

The applicant should demonstrate career objectives in geographic information systems or natural resource planning and management. Experience with GIS data collection and software applications (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Field Maps) and metadata documentation is preferred. Ability to navigate long trail systems on uneven terrain under inclement conditions while carrying equipment is essential. The participant should be a self-starter, well-organized, and an effective team player.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore spans 42 miles of Lake Superior shoreline in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The area includes diverse natural and cultural resources, including the Beaver Basin Wilderness. Housing is available at no cost and local amenities are nearby.

Housing

Park housing is available at no cost to the participant. Housing may be in Grand Marais, 50 miles from the duty station in Munising.
