POSITION SUMMARY:

Biological Services Interns will experience all the department has to offer as a glimpse into what a career path in Natural Resources looks like after graduation. The Biological Services Department strives to enhance, protect, and restore fish, wildlife, and plant communities and water bodies. Staff participate in research and monitoring of the environment on both tribal trust lands and the surrounding region.

Major programs include Great Lakes fisheries assessments, inland fish and wildlife assessments, forest management, invasive species management, beach health monitoring, water quality assessments, and some recycling programs to reduce hazardous chemicals from entering the environment. Biological Services also provides outreach and education to the community in both public events and printed publications. The goal of this internship is to give valuable experience across the biological and cultural aspects of manoomin restoration within the various departments that support these efforts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Ability to follow directions and work as a team
  • Ability to occasionally work on your own
  • Assist with field surveys in a variety of different program areas
  • Feel comfortable using a weed whip, wood chipper and other small equipment
  • Preparing education materials and workshops
  • Assist with public outreach events- feel comfortable speaking with the public
  • Some summary report writing
  • Attend any mandatory trainings
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position may require working during adverse weather conditions. Fieldwork and/or office duties may require the employee to begin early in the morning, work late into the evenings, and/or travel long distances. Heavy lifting (> 20 pounds) may be required and the employee should be in good physical condition.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Successful completion of some high school coursework.
  • Knowledge of the Bay Mills Reservation and surrounding areas. (preferred)
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn about the biological and cultural importance of manoomin and other non-human beings.
  • Ability to positively interact with the public.
  • Must have an excellent past work record.
  • Must be able to pass in criminal background check & drug screen
  • To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each function listed under the essential functions and physical demands categories of this position description.
