Kitchen Manager

The Kitchen Manager supports Portage Lake’s mission by assisting with food-service operations including food preparation, allergy needs, personnel management, recruiting volunteers, and executing effective kitchen practices.

• Manage daily food service and dining room operations
• Prepare nutritionally balanced and group/age‑appropriate meals
• Prepare food for those with special dietary needs
• Ensure safe preparation, serving, and storage of food to Serve Safe standards
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety
• Responsible for cleaning of all food service areas including kitchen, dining hall, storage, and recycling
• Inspect equipment and ensure proper cleanliness and sanitation
• Promote practices that reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle
• Assist Food Service Director with kitchen staff training in PLCBC and Serve Safe policies and procedures
• Direct kitchen staff in needed assignments and tasks (i.e. prep, dishes, restock)
• Coordinate with the Food Service Director to ensure the safety and hospitality of guests with dietary restrictions
• Recruit volunteers for retreat season
• Meet with the Food Service Director prior to group arrival to discuss the pre‑planned menu, expectations, needs, schedules, and more
• After the conclusion of a retreat/camp week, evaluate the week or weekend, communicate what did or did not work, and identify any other areas of improvement, success, or ideas

• Demonstrates a vital mature, and growing personal relationship in Jesus Christ
• Demonstrates emotional maturity, strong self‑awareness, and solid interpersonal skills
• Supports the mission and vision of PLCBC and the Evangelical Covenant Church
• Culinary skills to produce high standards of food quality, presentation, and hospitality
• Ability to foster Christ‑centered culture of excellence, playfulness, and service in kitchen
• Has proven ability to manage and supervise staff effectively
• Experience leading large food‑service setting: food preparation, cleaning, and commercial kitchen equipment
• Strong work ethic, positive attitude, precision, cleanliness, and passion for ministry
• Must hold current certification from Servesafe
• Knowledge of current health and safety laws and practices
• Experience in preparing special food for dietary needs

As a member of the year‑round staff, the Kitchen Manager will also contribute at times to: select strategic discussions on the overall mission of the camp, clerical assistance, hospitality services, housekeeping and grounds duties, staff outings, devotions, and special events.
