This job description is representative. The Environmental Specialist will provide environmental compliance and supporting Wetlands support to regional minining sites in The US.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Wetland Delineation & Assessment: Conduct field surveys to identify and map wetland boundaries, assess hydrology, and determine if activities (e.g., lime storage, transport, or facility expansion) impact wetlands
- Environmental Compliance: Prepare and submit wetland permits (e.g., Section 404 from the Army Corps of Engineers) and ensure compliance with Clean Water Act and state regulations
- Mitigation Planning: Design and implement wetland mitigation measures to offset unavoidable impacts, such as creating or restoring wetlands to compensate for losses
- Habitat Management: Monitor and maintain wetland habitats on or near lime facilities, supporting biodiversity and water quality
- Regulatory Liaison: Work with state and federal agencies to interpret permitting requirements and ensure lime operations meet environmental standards.
- Data Collection & Reporting: Maintain records of wetland conditions, mitigation progress, and compliance activities for audits and reporting.
These roles are often field-based
, requiring travel to lime processing plants, storage sites, or surrounding wetland areas. Work may be outdoors in all weather conditions, and some positions involve remote monitoring or GIS-based mapping
- Education: Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, hydrology, or a related field; some roles require advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., wetland delineation certification).
- Skills: Field surveying, GIS mapping, hydrology, regulatory compliance, data analysis, and knowledge of wetland permitting processes.
- Experience:
Entry-level roles may require on-the-job training; experienced positions often demand 2–5+ years in environmental or conservation work - Drive and maintain compliance with environmental operating permits locally;
Implement and maintain environmental monitoring and recordkeeping to satisfy compliance requirements focused on wetland delination & assessment, environmental compliance, mitigation planning, habitat managment, and data collection and reporting - Other duties may apply including maintaining environmental programs such as air and water compliance, spill prevention and control, waste and materials management, and employee training as required
- Provide regulatory guidance to facility leadership team and personnel
- Work with company resources to facilitate sustainability reporting, metrics tracking and other current or pending regulatory requirements
- Maintain a company presence to fully engage employees, contractor and vendors in the sound environmental management process, expectations and requirements
- Corporate and Division Metrics for Sustainability improvements/footprint reductions
- Deficiencies in internal EHS audits
Experience:
- 5 - 8 years of experience working in an industrial or manufacturing environment
- Bachelor’s degree – Geology, Hydrology, Environmental or Engineering discipline is required
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Lead by example and encourage teamwork and effective communication
- Experience with programs like Excel, Access required
- Ability to interpret environmental laws and permits
- Required to stay abreast of the changing regulatory landscape
