EssentialFunctions And Responsibilities
- Represent the Health System by providing assistance and guidance to all patients, staff and visitors to the SJMHS West Market Campuses.
- Patrol and monitor the internal and external activities of the grounds, parking lots, structures, and buildings to ensure compliance with health center policies, state law, and federal laws, responding to and reporting any violations to a command officer.
- Respond to reports of criminal activity and effect arrests as appropriate within the parameters of security police policy/procedures, state and federal law, and Michigan Commission of Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).
- Respond to emergencies, fire and building alarms, medical emergencies, and other public safety incidents, exercising independent judgment within legal parameters.
- Complete daily activity reports documenting non‑routine activities for referral to the appropriate manager.
- Prepare written reports for complaints, investigations of criminal activity, violations of security policy, and incidents involving the use of force.
- Complete assigned defibrillator and vehicle maintenance checks.
- Maintain all security police equipment in working condition and proactively report safety risks.
- Respond to complaints generated by patients, staff, and visitors, including lost property, suspicious activity, and suspicious packages.
- Provide general assistance such as locking/unlocking doors, vehicle lockouts, jumpstarts, and wheelchair assists.
- Report parking lot gate failures to Grounds and issue citations for parking violations.
- Self‑report any off‑duty police contact, arrests, and legal orders that could affect firearm status; failure to report may result in termination.
- Maintain confidences and protect patient and hospital information.
- Act in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of SJMHS and maintain a safe environment for coworkers.
- Adhere to applicable Federal, State, local laws, Trinity Health Standards of Conduct, and Security Police policies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Experience And Certification/Licensure- High School diploma or equivalent (Associate’s Degree preferred).
- Minimum 1 year of experience in campus security/police, military, or law enforcement.
- Successful completion and passing of a psychological evaluation.
- Current MCOLES license preferred or ability to complete MCOLES PA330 Academy Training within six months of hire.
- Maintain qualifications required by MCOLES and the State of Michigan.
- Maintain a valid, unrestricted Michigan driver’s license.
- Demonstrate ability to operate an Electronic Control Device (Taser) and conduct after‑care procedures.
- Maintain Taser certification and demonstrate proficiency annually through a certified Taser qualification test.
