ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Keep the track and track bed in good condition by checking for broken rails, defective switches, deteriorating track bed, obstructions, and weather-related issues.
- Perform track work tasks including pulling and driving spikes, replacing ties, surfacing track, changing rails, bolts, shoveling rock ballast, and using other track apparatus.
- Learn and apply FRA Track Safety Standards, GCOR, and RWP regulations to perform maintenance timely.
- Operate safely and efficiently with all equipment and tools associated with track maintenance, and maintain those tools such as track-wrenches.
- Remove and replace ballast, operate large non‑powered hand tools (shovels, picks, axes, cutters, sledgehammers) and electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic hand tools (drills, impact wrenches, jacks, power saws, grinders).
- Maintain accurate records of time worked, track conditions encountered, and corrective actions taken.
- Assist in working on train cars as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Minimum of three years prior work experience involving manual or mechanical labor.
- Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred.
- Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
- Knowledge and skills in using hand tools, wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, measuring tapes, power tools, hydraulic equipment, portable grinders, rail saws, spike pullers, track wrench machines, and power drills.
- Preferred experience reading and understanding safety manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, test materials, drawings, schematics, and procedure manuals.
- Must meet the physical requirements of the position.
- Position requires a flexible work schedule and occasional overtime.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Verbal comprehension:
Understand oral and written communications, both general and technical. - Communication skills:

Problem solving and troubleshooting. - Functional/Technical
Skills:
Possess technical and functional background to perform job duties at a high level of competence.
Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, handle objects, reach with hands and arms, write, talk, type, and hear. Occasionally required to sit, stoop, bend, kneel, lift, or move up to 80 lbs. Work outside in all weather conditions.
