Responsibilities
- Keep track and track bed in good shape; check for broken rails, defective switches, deteriorating track bed, track obstructions and weather‑related problems
- Perform track work tasks such as pulling and driving spikes, replacing ties, surfacing track, changing rail, bars, bolts, shoveling rock ballast and working with other track apparatus
- Learn and apply FRA Track Safety Standards, GCOR and RWP regulations; perform maintenance in a timely manner
- Operate equipment and tools associated with track maintenance (track‑wrench, hand tools, power tools, hydraulic equipment)
- Remove and replace ballast; operate hand and power tools (shovels, picks, axes, cutters, sledgehammers, drills, impact wrenches, jacks, power saws, grinders)
- Maintain accurate records of time worked and track conditions
- Assist on train cars as required
- Perform additional duties as assigned
- Minimum of three years prior work experience involving manual labor or mechanical work
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Physical Requirements
- Valid driver's license; CDL preferred
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds on occasion
- Must meet the physical demands of the position (sit, stand, walk, handle objects, lift up to 80 lbs, work outside in all weather)
- Knowledge and use of hand tools (wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, measuring tapes, etc.) and power tools (portable grinders, rail saws, spike pullers, track wrench machines, power drills)
- Experience reading safety manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, test materials, drawings, schematics, and procedure manuals
- Verbal comprehension
- Communication skills – provide clear instructions and directions
- Reasoning skills – problem solving and troubleshooting
- Functional/technical skills – perform job duties at a high level of competence
Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, handle objects, reach with hands and arms, write, talk, type and hear. Occasionally required to sit, stoop, bend and/or kneel and lift and/or move up to 80 lbs. Will work outside in all weather conditions.
