Under the supervision of the Operations Coordinator, provides semiskilled labor required for the preventive maintenance and repair of building features, fixtures, furnishings and HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and electronic systems and components thereof. Performs general maintenance and repairs required to maintain building operations and the safety and accessibility of exterior walkways and other paved areas.

This is a full-time, benefited position located at the County Jail at 12130 Fillmore St, West Olive, MI 49460. Typical working hours are Monday - Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provides semiskilled labor required for the preventive maintenance and repair of building features, fixtures, furnishings and HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and electrical systems and components thereof.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance, changing filters, checking belts and pulleys, and lubricating moving mechanical parts.
  • Repairs or replaces damaged, deteriorated or obsolete components of building features, fixtures, furnishings and operating systems, including floor, wall and ceiling coverings; lighting ballasts, electrical switches and outlets; faucet, sink, and drain traps; and fans and motors.
  • Maintains building security systems including smoke detectors, fire alarms, locks and exterior lighting systems. Checks pressure and temperature gauges, Ph levels and other control readings and makes necessary adjustments to maintain operations within established control limits.
  • Performs carpentry repairs to trim and other woodwork; hangs and finishes drywall; and installs shelves, cabinets and other features. Installs partitions, counters, overhead storage units, drawers, computer carriages and other components of modular work spaces.
  • Paints interior, exterior surfaces, as well as installs wall coverings.
  • Repairs and/or replaces damaged, deteriorated or obsolete roofing.
  • Mows lawns, trims shrubbery and trees; and removes trash, debris, ice, snow and other obstacles and hazards from walkways, parking lots and other paved areas. Installs flowers, shrubs, bushes, trees and other ornamental plantings; waters and fertilizes plantings; and removes weeds.
  • Repairs and replaces damaged and deteriorated concrete and masonry features.
  • Performs a wide variety of tasks related to construction and remodeling, such as replacing ceiling tiles, drop ceilings, painting, pouring/finishing concrete, and repairing/assembling office furniture.
  • Reads blueprints, schematics, and specifications to determine procedure for constructing cabinets, interior partitions, door framing, and other tasks.
  • Monitors inventory levels of operating supplies, replacement parts and materials and notifies supervisor when reordering is necessary.
  • Maintains the work area in a neat, clean and safe condition.
  • Performs other functions as assigned.
  • High School Diploma or GED combined with three (3) years experience in maintenance and repair of building operating systems, building and grounds maintenance or general construction and remodeling.

    Certifications:
    • Valid Michigan driver's license.
    • Must have the ability to gain certification to operate a HILO, aerial lifts, and other equipment-related certifications as required by MIOSHA/OSHA within 12 months of hire.
    Required Knowledge and

    Skills:
  • Working knowledge of applied mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, electricity and electronics.
  • Working knowledge of the maintenance construction trades, including painting, carpentry, electrical and electronic repair, plumbing, etc.
  • Federal, state and local construction, safety, fire, health and sanitation statutes, codes, and ordinances.
  • Working knowledge of landscape and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering and architectural drawings and designs, mechanical drawings, engineering and architectural specifications, diagrams and other specifications.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and practices.
  • Working knowledge of the proper use of manual and power tools commonly used in the maintenance construction trades.
  • Ability to layout work efficiently so as to minimize man-hours and materials required to properly complete work.
  • Knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHA occupational health and safety rules, regulations and requirements. Ability to perform all work in accordance with established safety protocols and procedures.
