Location: Brooklyn

To further the mission of Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan and by providing a fun and safe camp environment and exceptional customer service for visitors. The Camp Specialist is responsible for supporting program facilities and day-to‑day functions of camp.

Essential Functions

  • Apply basic youth development principles to empower girls, embrace diversity, aid in competency development, and build connections.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for troops within the identified mission and outcomes.
  • Engage with troops outside of programming activities to ensure a positive camp experience.
  • Adapt activities as necessary to create progress based on the needs and experience of the participants.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety for campers and staff.
  • Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with Camp Director(s) when appropriate.
  • Inspect equipment before use, ensure proper utilization, and store equipment properly when not in use. Perform equipment maintenance as trained and able; report needed repairs promptly to the Camp Director(s).
  • Be a role model to campers and staff by presenting a positive attitude and appropriate behavior, following GSHOM and Camp procedures at all times.
  • Follow and uphold all risk management procedures at activities, including high adventure areas such as the waterfront and the target sports range(s).
  • Deliver First Aid/CPR and follow camp emergency procedures as needed.
  • Assist in the management and care of the camp and its facilities. Perform maintenance as trained and able; report repairs or maintenance needed promptly to the Program/Property Manager.
  • Operate necessary equipment as trained and in a safe and efficient manner. May include mower, tractor, chain saws, etc.
  • Complete general maintenance and janitorial projects as assigned.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those assigned.
  • Work with the camp staff team to ensure success in all aspects of camp functions.
  • Participate in food service of kitchen and dining areas.
  • Do what needs to be done to ensure a clean and safe environment at camp.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain at least 2 of the following certifications: waterfront lifeguard, archery instructor, range safety observer/officer, and small craft safety.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain Adult and Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Ability, both visual and auditory, to identify safety hazards and monitor guest and staff behavior and enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend and stretch.
  • Ability to lift, up to approximately 35 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required.
  • Ability to self‑regulate personal behavior in a fast‑paced community environment.
  • Ability to safely and properly use power tools and equipment.
  • Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing/walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more).
  • Knowledge of the Girl Scout program preferred.
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults outdoors.
  • Must be willing to become a member of Girl Scouts.
  • Must be able to pass State and National background check.

  • Activity instruction & facilitation.

Ability and willingness to work in various activity areas within camp (archery, campfire, waterfront, hiking, etc.) in all types of weather from rain, snow, extreme heat and cold. Must be able to move around the camp property to assist campers in their activities. Will spend majority of hours each day standing and either assisting with maintenance projects or actively interacting with both adult and child campers.
