Job Description Bus Driver Core Responsibilities
  • Safe Vehicle Operation: Operate a school bus by assessing traffic and road conditions, monitoring student behavior, and ensuring safe delivery of student passengers to and from school in accordance with state laws and school district policies. Drivers are evaluated annually on driving and student management skills.
  • Route and Passenger Management: Make stops only at authorized locations and transport only authorized passengers. Update routes and maps, adjust timetables as necessary, and communicate all route changes and road hazards to district leadership.
  • Pre-Trip Inspections: Perform bus safety pre‑trip inspections required by law to ensure proper vehicle working condition and maintain all onboard safety equipment. Drivers are evaluated annually on pre‑trip inspections.
  • Post-Trip Inspections & Reporting: Conduct post‑trip inspections to check for vandalism, lost articles, or sleeping students. Document and communicate all mechanical defects and maintenance needs promptly.
  • Student Safety & Emergency Protocols: Organize and perform mandated bus evacuation drills, report red‑light violations to law enforcement, and ensure student safety by stopping traffic in accordance with state law.
  • Student Conduct Communication: Monitor student behavior and provide written reports for all incidents of misconduct to building administration. Communicate student conduct expectations and route information to parents and school staff as needed.
  • Bus Cleanliness: Maintain a safe and sanitary bus environment by sweeping and dusting the interior daily, washing the exterior at least twice monthly, and keeping emergency lights free of dirt, mud, and snow.
  • Daily Record Keeping: Perform daily record‑keeping activities, including accurate completion of pre‑trip inspection forms, mileage logs, route surveys, and updated route maps.
  • Credential Maintenance: Maintain a clean driving record and a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with all appropriate state endorsements. Immediately report any traffic violations or changes in medical certification status to the district.
Supervisory & Operational Responsibilities
  • State Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all state‑required transportation paperwork, logs, and compliance reports are completed accurately and submitted to the appropriate agencies in a timely manner.
  • Fleet Maintenance Coordination: Oversee the mechanical readiness of the entire fleet and coordinate routine, preventative, and emergency maintenance with the district’s contract mechanic.
  • Driver Training & Onboarding: Manage the onboarding pipeline for new bus drivers, ensuring they are fully trained, road‑ready, and compliant with all state‑mandated requirements, background checks, and licensing codes.
  • Scheduling & Route Logistics: Coordinate daily driver schedules, establish efficient district‑wide bus routes, manage driver call‑outs, and secure substitute drivers to ensure seamless morning and afternoon coverage.
  • Special Event Transportation: Oversee transportation logistics for district field trips, athletic events, and extracurricular activities, ensuring proper driver staffing and vehicle availability.
  • Community Liaison: Serve as the primary point of contact for parents, community members, and school administrators regarding transportation questions, route delays, scheduling adjustments, or student behavior escalations.
  • Emergency Incident Management: Act as the primary coordinator during transportation emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, or severe weather conditions, interfacing with emergency services, mechanics, and district administration to ensure student safety.
  • General Directives: Perform other tasks and administrative duties as assigned by the Superintendent or school board.
Job Requirements
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred.
