Job Title
To assist Special Education students being transported to and from school in an effort to provide them with the physical help and emotional support they need, in order for them to gain the maximum benefits possible from the district's special education program
Period of Employment:
School Year, Route will begin and end in Newberry
Possess high school diploma or equivalent
Shall have completed not less than two (2) years of related experiences in special education programs and/or services or
- Shall have completed a state approved program for the preparation of instructional aides/paraprofessionals
Enjoy working with children of all ages and be sensitive to their needs
Excellent moral character and personal habits
Possess qualities of initiative, self-reliance and leadership
Neat, clean and presentable
Strong organizational and time management skills, written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, diligent work habits, and the ability to apply common sense to routine decision-making
Ability to maintain self-control and complete tasks with frequent interruptions
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
Must have regular and reliable attendance
Ability to carry and move heavy objects and lift 80-100lbs. Possess a valid driver's license
Duties and ResponsibilitiesMaintain confidentiality regarding the student, information and materials used in this position
Be able to assist and lift children up to 80-100 pounds, on and off the bus, including those on wheelchairs
Complete and maintain proficiency in all safety courses, trainings, and certifications as required
Clean students who drool, have runny noses, vomit or have toileting accidents
Must be physically able and willing to intervene with student(s) to prevent altercations
Able to accept and deal with unusual student experiences and behaviors without becoming offended or upset
Assist the bus driver in any way needed to promote the safe transporting of the student(s) in all situations and conditions
Assist the bus driver in maintaining a clean and sanitary bus
Assist students to fasten and unfasten seat belts and/or harnesses and keep students seated
Be willing to learn the operation of the bus radio communication system and the wheelchair lift
Be familiar with basic first aid procedures and the process to use with student(s) who may have convulsive disorders
Assist the bus driver in maintaining discipline on the bus
Follow established procedures in reporting any problems created by student(s)
Become familiar with school bus emergency procedures
Remain free of substance abuse and/or illegal drug use at all times
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Wages and Fringes: $24.23 per hour as per ESP Master Agreement
