Scope Of Position

Scope of position:
The practice of nursing by a Licensed Practical Nurse is defined as the performing of selected tasks and sharing of responsibility under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of an RN, perform selected tasks and activities to obtain and report information to assist the RN in the assessment, planning, and evaluation of patient needs.
  • Contribute to the nursing assessment by collecting, reporting, and recording objective and subjective data in an accurate and timely manner. This includes:
    • Observation of condition or change in patient status
    • Signs and symptoms that deviate from normal health status
    • Participate in development of the patient's care plan
    • Delegate and give direct care based on priority of needs and established goals
    • Provide an environment conducive to safety and health
    • Document nursing interventions and responses to care
    • Communicate nursing interventions and responses to care to appropriate members of the healthcare team
    • Under the direction of the RN, perform patient‑related activities, medication administration, diagnostic testing, therapeutic treatments, which contribute to safe and efficient delivery of patient care
    • Support and participate in quality initiatives
    • Maintain accountability for professional competency, demonstrating knowledge and critical thinking to promote optimal patient care
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • State of CT LPN License
  • Good oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • CPR certified
  • CPI certified
  • Ability to read and write English with a command of verbal English
  • Ability to work well and collaboratively with other members of the health care team
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
  • Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures
  • Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility
  • Ability to work in a time‑oriented environment, including exposure to all patient elements (i.e., blood‑borne pathogens); physical requirements include lifting and pulling of patients, pushing of stretchers, standing, and walking
  • May be exposed to environmental hazards such as anesthetic gases or elements
  • Ability to meet the care needs of the patient populations served
