Hinkle Contracting, LLC, a CRH company, provides asphalt paving and production services across Kentucky.
Primary FunctionThe Asphalt Laborer position is responsible for performing numerous duties on paving projects. The employee will work in a dynamic environment, transferring between tasks as required, operating hand and power tools, and handling general labor assignments such as cleaning and preparing sites. This position reports directly to the Paving Foreman.
Responsibilities- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task;
- Assist paving crew with duties such as shoveling, raking, running a wheelbarrow, and safely backing/dumping trucks into the paver;
- Signal operators of equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and materials with shovel;
- Follow direction of Foreman regarding daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or jobsite;
- Run small power tools such as jack hammer when needed;
- Digs, spreads, and levels construction materials;
- Lifts, carries, and holds material, tools and supplies;
- Assist in the placement, movement, and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones and other traffic control devices;
- Perform varied tasks involving strenuous manual labor;
- Perform tasks requiring dexterous use of hands and tools;
- Maintain a clean job site, picking up tools and equipment to eliminate potential hazards;
- Perform daily pre‑and‑post inspections with appropriate documentation in compliance with company policies;
- Shoveling asphaltic materials and assisting with maintenance of asphalt finishing machine (adding or removing screed extensions) as required;
- Maintain daily equipment condition and report needed repairs to the supervisor;
- Shift schedules may vary according to project;
- Report any problems to the manager;
- Follow all company policies and OSHA / MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment;
- Operate equipment safely and efficiently;
- Follow verbal and written instruction;
- Communicate effectively and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills;
- Perform any other general duties as specified.
- High school diploma or GED required;
- Thorough understanding of paving industry fundamentals, including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction, and other details related to asphalt paving;
- Pass pre‑employment drug screen and criminal background check;
- Pass a pre‑employment “Fit for Work” physical;
- Provide valid documentation for the I‑9 Immigration document;
- Display a professional and courteous attitude toward co‑workers, supervisors and the public at all times;
- Report to work at the designated start time;
- Willing to travel and work away from home when required – this role requires extensive travel on a portable paving crew;
- Willing to work nights and weekends as necessary;
- Willing to work overtime when required;
- Maintain current driver’s license meeting state requirements;
- Maintain a Motor Vehicle Record that meets company standards;
- Work outdoors in extreme temperatures, hot or cold;
- Strictly adhere to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook;
- Willing to work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties as required;
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as required by OSHA and/or MSHA;
- Be at least 18 years old;
- Previous related experience in the construction field preferred.
