Job Description - Correctional Officer II (260004W7)

General Duties
  • Maintain custodial care and control of inmates detained or sentenced to the Essex County Correctional Facility by escorting them under restraint, patrolling facilities, making periodic rounds, head counts, and security checks of building, grounds and inmate quarters.
  • Monitor inmate movements and whereabouts.
  • Supervise and direct inmates during work assignments to maintain order and security.
  • Observe conduct and behavior of inmates, noting significant behavioral patterns, to prevent disturbances, violence, escapes, or other crises such as suicides.
  • Investigate suspicious inmate activity related to contraband by searching individuals, packages, mail and inmate quarters for weapons or other forbidden items.
  • Develop working relationships with inmates by referring them to appropriate supportive services (medical, psychiatric, vocational, etc.) to aid in rehabilitation.
  • Prepare written reports on occurrences such as fires, disturbances, accidents, and security breaches.
  • Record daily activities in the unit log and review reports to ensure accurate, up‑to‑date information.
  • Perform related duties such as screening visitors, operating two‑way radios, carrying and operating firearms, serving food to inmates, and assisting in transporting inmates outside of the facility.
  • Create disciplinary, informational, and confidential reports.
  • Use lawful physical force, as per Essex County Sheriff's Department policies, to maintain or restore order.
  • Carry and use firearms when authorized in a safe and lawful manner.
Qualifications
  • 19 years of age or older.
  • High School diploma or GED certificate.
  • Successfully pass an extensive personal interview and background check.
  • Qualify in all phases of testing (written, medical, physical, and psychological).
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or served a sentence in a Jail or House of Correction.
  • Have some knowledge of correctional procedures.
  • Possess ability to instruct, counsel, and advise inmates with a focus on rehabilitation and return to society.
  • Hold a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Maintain regular and predictable work attendance.
  • Remain calm, make decisions, and act quickly in emergency and dangerous situations; adapt to varying work situations.
  • Interact effectively with people under physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with persons from diverse ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
  • Motivate others and understand, explain, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Maintain accurate records and follow fairly complex written and oral instructions.
  • Lifting or carrying an inmate or fellow officer when needed; stand and walk for prolonged periods with reasonable physical stamina and endurance.
  • Prepare reports, analyze and determine the applicability of data, draw conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Determine proper format and procedure for assembling items of information.
