SECONDARY TESOL INSTRUCTOR

Broad Function:

The TESOL Teacher is responsible for teaching English to non-native speakers and will create lesson plans, assess student progress, and provide constructive feedback to help students improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Achieving academic excellence requires that the TESOL Teacher works collaboratively with other members of the school staff and with the parents of each student. The TESOL teacher will provide a rigorous academic environment that actively engages students;

incorporates best educational practices; creates an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity, communicates regularly with parents to update them on how their child is performing, addresses the needs of all learners and supports the social/emotional development of the students. The TESOL teacher will also follow school guidelines, track student progress, ensure students follow classroom rules, and maintain progress reports that can be shared with school staff and pertinent stakeholders.

Essential Functions:

* Plans, organizes, and provides instruction in English that meet state and federal standards.

* Provides instruction that is consistent and coordinated with the district's/school's instructional program so as to ensure that students meet and exceed learning targets.

* Develops and delivers lesson plans that utilize a broad range of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies.

* Collaborates with other teachers, administrators, and parents to support student learning and development through participation in IDT meetings, SDT meetings or parent/teacher conferences.

* Attends professional development workshops and conferences to stay up-to-date on the latest teaching methods and technologies.

* Addresses all aspects of communication through appropriate instruction that develops each student's ability to read, write, speak, and listen in the appropriate content area.

* Administers academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student progress for meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition.

* Maintains complete and accurate records of student progress and evidence of growth and progress.

* Provides a nurturing and supportive learning environment that encourages student responsibility and incorporates challenging instructional strategies.

* Adapts curriculum to provide individual, small group, and/or remedial instruction as to meet the needs of individual students and subgroups of students.

* Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior required to run an orderly and productive classroom environment.

* Employs a variety of instructional techniques and strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students.

* Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.

* Participates in Department Meetings.

* Administers LAS Link Assessment in accordance with State testing guidelines.

* Supports the administration of District Benchmark testing, participates in data review and data driven decision making processes.

* Oversees assigned out-of-classroom activities during the school day, as needed.

* Proactively identifies, and takes action to push-in and pull out support services to meet changing students' needs.

* Effectively communicates with classroom teachers on student achievement to match support accordingly.

* Effectively manages time to allow for efficient travel between schools.

* Teaches multiple classes and benchmarks grading to compliment secondary school students.

Qualifications, Experience and

Job Requirements:

* Valid State of CT Bachelor of the Arts or Bachelor of Science Certificate required. Master's degree preferred.

* Valid State of CT TESOL (111) Certificate required; and/or Elementary or Secondary School Teacher certification with TESOL cross endorsement required.

* Proof or demonstration of English grammar proficiency required.

* Exhibits a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills that relates well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.

* Has excellent integrity; demonstrates good moral character and initiative.
