Broad FunctionThe District-wide Special Education Teacher is responsible for development, and creation of student-centered programming for grades k-12 for the Middletown School District. In addition, The Special Education Teacher teaches a classroom of up to 12 elementary school students with significant social, emotional, behavioral, learning and/or mental health issues.
Responsibilities- Develops programs, and supports and organizes services for students in the special education program.
- Provides daily living skills and primary level instruction, in accordance with developed plans.
- Uses reliable data to prepare, plan and implement incisively aligned instruction in the resource room and/or classroom setting, with small groups of students and individuals.
- Drives, records, and tracks student learning progress and growth toward academic, behavioral, social, and emotional goals.
- Utilizes special tools, programs, and equipment to scaffold instruction and to support student learning
- Communicates and collaborates with classroom teachers to build better learning environments.
- Establishes and maintains individualized education plans (IEPs) and other forms relevant to student performance and special education protocols.
- Facilitates planning and placement team meetings.
- Collaborates with related service providers and behavior therapists (BCBAs and RBTs) to develop and implement each child's individualized programming.
- Delivers specialized instruction to support unique learning needs, data collection and interpreting evaluative data to drive individualized instruction
- Recognizes and practices to implement social-emotional learning strategies for oneself, adults, and students. Excellent teaming, collaboration, and communication skills with special education staff, related service providers, regular education teachers, and administrative team.
- Develops and evaluates measurable IEP goals and objectives
- Evaluates students as needed using standard-based and curriculum-based measures
- Conducts reliable and valid assessments and evaluations to determine each child's academic levels.
- Provides specialized instruction to students in the special education classroom and general education classroom.
- Supervises and supports paraprofessionals as they support student learning in the resource room and classrooms. Develop a daily/weekly schedule of instructional and non-instructional activities for each paraprofessional that supports students on your caseload, always with the intent to build students’ independence.
- Conducts appropriate evaluations and assists other teams in understanding the special education eligibility process for students with or suspected of having a disability, including the use of state guidelines.
- Demonstrates teacher-leadership qualities to bring initiative and innovation to the special education department in the above areas.
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Special Education and or Special Education Supervisor
- Knowledge of best practices working with students with exceptionalities (including but not limited to):
Learning Disabilities (LD)/Dyslexia, Emotional Disability (ED), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD),Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Executive Functioning Deficits required. - Experience and knowledge regarding differentiated instruction and inclusive educational practices Knowledge of special education laws, policies, and procedures including IDEA and the PPT process required.
- The ability to establish and maintain family partnerships of students on caseload required.
- Working knowledge of the co-teaching and consultative models required.
- Ability to partner with classroom teachers in a co-teaching and/or consultative role – including lesson development, delivery of differentiated instruction, and analysis of student performance data and SRBI required.
- Ability to provide direct academic instruction in a resource room model; deliver specialized instruction required.
