The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) promotes the overall health and wellness of persons with behavioral health needs through an integrated network of holistic, comprehensive, effective, and efficient services and supports that foster dignity, respect, and self‑sufficiency in those we serve. Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH) opened in 1868 as the State’s public hospital for the treatment of persons with mental illness and now serves 17 inpatient units across Middletown and Hartford campuses.
ResponsibilitiesProvide professional occupational therapy services in a state facility. Duties include selecting, planning, administering, and implementing occupational therapy programs for individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities; administering individual and group instruction in activities of daily living, independent living skills, sensorimotor and psychosocial skills, therapeutic adaptations, and specialized assessments; determining and carrying out treatment consistent with physician prescription; assessing educational needs; organizing new projects and methods;
serving on the treatment team; consulting with supervisors, physicians, and other professionals regarding individual progress and treatment plans; recommending changes; participating in training programs for staff and students; attending workshops and conferences; instructing individuals and parents on home and community treatments; making adaptive equipment; maintaining records and preparing reports; coordinating occupational therapy services with other disciplines; requisitioning and distributing supplies;
coordinating volunteer efforts; escorting individuals to community trips; performing duties in home or community settings; acting as supervisor in absence; acting as consultant, advisor or resource person; maintaining inventory; and performing related duties as required.
Incumbents must possess and maintain licensure as an Occupational Therapist issued by the Connecticut State Department of Public Health in accordance with applicable Connecticut General Statutes.
Preferred QualificationsExperience working in an inpatient behavioral health facility providing group and individual services related to daily living skills; experience performing standardized and non‑standardized assessments; completion of written reports and documentation related to assessment findings.
Special RequirementsMay be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in American Sign Language for certain designated positions; may need a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license; may be required to travel.
Working ConditionsMay be exposed to danger of injury and to moderately disagreeable conditions while providing treatment to individuals.
