Summary
This position reports to a tax audit manager within the Division of Revenue (DOR) enforcement section. The role involves developing detailed, complex, multi‑state plans and audits for all entity types administered by DOR and engaged in the marijuana industry. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with state and federal law, drafting technical question responses and Notices of Assessment, prioritizing field audits for the retail marijuana tax and related business and income taxes, and advising DOR on key tax matters.
Travel to training or audit sites may be required.
- Audits tax filings, financial records, and supporting documentation to determine tax liability and ensure accurate tax collection in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Researches tax records and conducts interviews, including field investigations, to obtain and clarify information.
- Identifies errors, issues, and non‑compliance and recommends corrective action based on audit findings such as refunds, penalties, or late payments.
- Provides technical guidance and consultation to ensure uniform application of state tax laws and promote voluntary compliance.
- Explains audit findings and works with taxpayers to bring accounts into compliance.
- Completes continuing education to stay current on auditing standards, methods, techniques, and best practices.
- Uses commercial and proprietary automated information systems and software to research, review, analyze, document, and report on financial information.
- Prepares and submits audit summaries and reports that accurately document findings and support agency action.
- Participates in meetings, conference calls, and on‑site visits.
- Delivers excellent customer service to internal and external customers and the public.
- Communicates effectively with people across cultures, abilities, genders, ethnicities, ages, and races.
- May prepare legal documents to enter judgment against delinquent taxpayers, secure court authority for wage garnishment, and arrange payment installment schedules.
- Three years’ experience in tax auditing, including audit of tax and financial documents to determine correct tax liability.
- Two years’ experience in analyzing tax discrepancies or related problems, developing alternatives, and recommending solutions.
- Three years’ experience preparing audit summaries and reports that clearly document findings and recommendations.
- One year of experience providing technical guidance on complex tax matters to taxpayers or their representatives in specialized areas such as corporate, business, or personal income taxes, excise taxes, or bank franchise taxes.
