Learn the entry level skills to enter the exciting and rewarding field of dentistry. Students will learn all areas of the field to be able to work efficiently in a dental environment. They will learn how to work closely with the dentist and hygienist as a member of the team and to assume the overall responsibilities of a dental assistant.

Dental assistants have many tasks, ranging from patient care to record keeping, in a dental office. Their duties vary by state and by the dentists’ offices where they work.

Duties typically include:

  • Work with patients to make them comfortable in the dental chair, and to prepare them for treatments and procedures
  • Prepare the work area for patient treatment by setting out instruments and materials
  • Help dentists by handing them instruments during procedures
  • Keep patients’ mouths dry by using suction hoses or other equipment
  • Keep records of dental treatments
  • Work with patients on billing and payment

Areas of Study: Introduction to charting, terminology, procedures, materials in all dental specialties and front office management. 72 hours. Class is limited to 12 students.

Prerequisites:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Copy of high school diploma or GED.

Note: Textbook required. An additional fee will be charged to students for class make-up hours. 100% attendance required.

Classes will be held In-Person at the Lincroft Campus.

This program is approved by the New Jersey Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners.

Now includes Dental Assisting National Board’s Radiation Health and Safety Examination

The program includes 25 didactic hours, 20 lab hours and a required clinical practicum with competency testing in a dental office that performs intraoral radiographic procedures, using both paralleling and bisecting angle techniques, and has digital x-ray equipment. Students can locate their own dental offices that are willing to provide this clinical experience under the supervision of a licensed dentist, licensed dental hygienist or licensed x-ray technologist.

Otherwise, Brookdale will provide potential clinical sites for students. The instructor will provide an explanation of the clinical requirements along with necessary paperwork to be completed by the chosen office.

Students will take the Dental Assisting National Board’s (DANB) Radiation Health and Safety Examination upon successful completion of all components and the return of the radiation badge. At that time a certificate of completion will be issued.

After passing the DANB Radiation Health and Safety Examination, submitting a license application and becoming a New Jersey licensed Dental Radiologic Technologist, you will be permitted to use the credential, LRT (D).

To be eligible to enroll, the following criteria must be met:

  • Copy of high school diploma or GED — needs to be submitted to Danielle Strauch at dstrauch prior to registration
  • 18 years of age or older
  • NJ requires that students must attest, in writing, to their good moral character. Download the Student Moral Character Statement Form or contact Danielle Strauch e completed, the form needs to be submitted to Danielle Strauch prior to registration.
