You will contribute to the design and coordination of building systems for schools, healthcare facilities, commercial offices, and retail environments, while working in a stable, career-focused firm that provides strong training, mentorship, and comprehensive benefits.
Responsibilities
* Design mechanical and broader MEP systems, including HVAC, chilled water, hot water, and fire protection systems, for regional projects in the education, healthcare, business, and retail sectors.
* Develop and refine detailed construction drawings and design documents using AutoCAD, and collaborate closely with CAD operators to ensure accuracy, coordination, and timely completion of deliverables.
* Support and perform project management activities on small and medium-sized projects, including planning tasks, tracking progress, and coordinating with other engineers, designers, and project stakeholders.
* Execute engineering design tasks on large and complex projects under the direction of a principal engineer, ensuring that all design elements integrate effectively with other disciplines and building systems.
* Interface and coordinate with other personnel involved in the project, including internal engineering teams and external partners, to resolve design issues and maintain project schedules.
* Apply knowledge of building codes, standards, and building structures to ensure that all designs comply with applicable regulations and best practices.
* Participate in redline review processes, incorporating feedback and revisions into drawings and design documents to improve clarity and constructability.
* Demonstrate a strong desire to understand, refine, and expand expertise in the design of MEP/FP systems for schools, healthcare facilities, commercial buildings, and retail spaces.
* Utilize MS Office tools to prepare reports, calculations, schedules, and project documentation that support design decisions and client communication.
* Coordinate with project teams to ensure that mechanical and MEP designs align with overall building design objectives, including energy efficiency, comfort, and operational reliability.
Essential Skills
* 5-10+ years of design experience in the engineering field, with a focus on mechanical and MEP building systems.
* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
* Demonstrated experience in MEP design projects, including HVAC, chilled water, hot water, and building systems.
* Proficiency in AutoCAD for producing and modifying engineering drawings.
* Proficiency with MS Office applications for documentation, coordination, and communication.
* Strong understanding of building systems design, including mechanical, HVAC, and fire protection systems.
* Knowledge of building codes, standards, and building structures relevant to MEP and mechanical engineering.
* Experience in project management or project coordination within engineering or building design projects.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, CAD operators, and other project stakeholders.
* Ability to work on both small and medium-sized projects independently and to contribute to large or complex projects under the guidance of a principal engineer.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
* Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certification or Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is highly desirable, or strong interest in obtaining a P.E. in the near future.
* Experience with Revit for building information modeling (BIM) is a plus.
* Familiarity with fire protection and sprinkler system design.
* Experience with redline processes and revising drawings based on review comments.
* Exposure to or experience in MEP engineering across commercial, institutional, and healthcare projects.
* Interest in ongoing professional development and participation in career-specific training in building sciences.
* Ability to live and work locally in the Hudson Valley region and commit to a long-term career path with a regional MEP/FP design firm.
Work Environment
This position is based in a professional office environment with standard hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, primarily in the Middletown office.
