A certified pharmacy technician, under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, engage in the following activities to the extent that the activities do not require the exercise of professional judgment:

  • 1. 1  Entering information into and retrieving information from a database or patient profile
  • 2. 2  Preparing and affixing labels
  • 3. 3  Stocking dangerous drugs and retrieving those drugs from inventory
  • 4. 4  Counting and pouring dangerous drugs into containers
  • 5. 5  Placing dangerous drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist
  • 6. 6  Non-sterile drug compounding following the completion of site-specific training
  • 7. 7  Sterile drug compounding following the completion of a site-specific training
  • 8. 7  Stocking automated drug storage systems, floor stock, and crash carts
Qualifications Education

Minimum Level of

Education Required:

High School completion / GED

  • * Preferred educational qualifications:
    Completion of an ASHP/ACPE-accredited technician education and training program
  • *
Licensure/Certification /Registration
  • * Certified Pharmacy Technician through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
  • * Registration with the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a “Certified Pharmacy Technician” or eligible for registration within 45 days of hire.
Experience

Minimum Level of Experience

Required:

No prior job-related work experience

Preferred experience:

Prior hospital, long-term care or retail experience preferred

Knowledge/Skills
  • * Possess good interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and problem solving skills
  • * Able to read and write printed material in English
  • * Proficiency with computer keyboard operations
  • * Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications preferred
  • * Ability to compute simple algebraic ratios, volume/volume percentage and weight/volume percentage
  • * Ability to troubleshoot problems and/or do minor maintenance on all pharmacy equipment, printers, computers and telecommunication equipment with adequate training in the pharmacy. Must be familiar with pharmacy software
  • * Possess ability to work well with other health care workers and perform as team member
  • * Flexibility in scheduling essential as mentor/trainer of new coworkers
