Job Description

JOB GOAL: The Special Education Teacher Assistant will work with students with disabilities under the direction and supervision of certified personnel to assist students in reaching their goals as indicated on their IEPs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Assist in implementing IEP goals.
  • Carry out small group instruction and assist in one‑on‑one instruction as needed.
  • Assist teachers and therapists in maintaining appropriate data and records.
  • Support the continuous implementation of skills and goals associated with students’ OT, SLP and PT needs.
  • Carry out and maintain computer skills and communication devices for students.
  • Implement equipment, sensory, mobility, behavior plans and self‑care plans (toileting) per students’ needs; physical ability to assist in lifting students for positioning, changing, toileting, etc. is essential.
Job Requirements REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to demonstrate sound decision‑making capabilities consistent with established school policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow instructions provided by school administrators and assigned staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate familiarity with state and district established rules and regulations governing the education of students including students with disabilities.
  • Ability to provide direct academic, behavioral, and self‑help support to students in a regular and special education classroom.
  • Ability to reproduce and maintain files of learning materials using current technology.
  • Ability to lift, transfer, feed and toilet students, when necessary.
  • Ability to integrate student IEP goals, including OT, PT, S/L goals, into daily curriculum.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Mobility and agility required.
  • Keep all appropriate certification requirements current.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid RI Paraprofessional Certification.
  • Documentation of a clear BCI/FBI report.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or School Committee may find appropriate.
