The job of "Special Education Teacher" is done for the purpose(s) of facilitating Special Education student success in the least restrictive environment in the areas of academics, behavior regulation, interpersonal/social skills, self-management, and activities of daily living through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities, outcomes; addressing specific needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, and to ensure access to general education curriculum and non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible.
A primary focus is the establishment of a positive learning environment that promotes a high level of achievement for all students while considering the background and developmental level of the individual student. This teacher will work collaboratively with general education teachers, special educators, administration, Speech and Language Pathologist, Other Related Service Providers, Psychologist, and paraprofessionals to provide appropriate services and supports to meet the myriad of student needs.

All educators hired by MPS must provide Certification of demonstrated Proficiency or Awareness in Science of Reading and Structured Literacy, appropriate to the work assignment. Collaborate with other educators and related service providers to maximize student outcomes. Build trusting relationships with and support faculty, staff, students, and parents. Consistently provide functional skill development, accommodations and appropriate modifications to the curriculum per Individual Education Programs and collect data regarding progress toward goals.
Demonstrate an understanding of functional skills and implement a system of positive behavior interventions. Familiarity with IEP process and reporting. Skills in managing challenging student behaviors strongly preferred. Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment. Assist in collection of data for providing appropriate classroom interventions. Maintain appropriate records for the purpose of continuous progress monitoring.
All educators hired by MPS must provide Certification of demonstrated Proficiency or Awareness in Science of Reading and Structured Literacy, appropriate to the work assignment. Work directly with students in classroom and/or other environments, as necessary, to model behavior intervention strategies for staff. Provide direct instruction to students in social skills, self-regulation strategies. The ability and willingness to support and physically manage crisis as needed Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Special Education Valid certification from RIDE.
At least 3 year(s) of relevant experience preferred. Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
