Job Description

Middletown Public Schools is seeking a qualified educator to serve as a 0.1 FTE CTE Teacher within our Health Careers Academy. This position requires a dedicated professional to contribute to the Sports Medicine and Athletic Training Pathway. The instructor will promote student success by designing rigorous curriculum, supporting work-based learning, and helping students achieve industry-recognized credentials.

Job Requirements
  • Required Qualifications

    * Bachelor’s degree

    * Must possess or be eligible for Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) CTE Teacher certification in Health Occupations (Certificate Area: Sports Medicine, Rehabilitative Services, and Athletic Trainer).

    * Current NATABOC certification and licensure by the State of Rhode Island for Athletic Training are mandatory.

    * Commitment to NATA standards and annual certification maintenance.

    Preferred Qualifications

    * Three to five years of experience in educational-based athletics or industry experience in sports medicine.
    Special Skills or Experience

    * Ability to design and deliver a high-quality, project-based curriculum that engages a diverse student body.

    * Expertise in NATA industry standards and their integration into classroom and laboratory instruction.

    * Strong communication skills for collaborating with industry partners, parents, and school officials.

    * Experience mentoring students through Work-Based Learning (WBL) and capstone projects.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    * Design and deliver engaging, project-based instruction in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training that develops students’ clinical knowledge, critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills while ensuring equitable access and support for all students.

    * Support a coherent 9–12 Health Careers pathway aligned with Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) CTE requirements, industry standards, postsecondary opportunities, and Health Careers Academy goals.

    * Integrate current professional and industry standards, including those of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), throughout classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction.

    * Prepare students to earn applicable state and nationally recognized credentials, including First Aid, CPR, Patient Care Technician (PCT), and other credentials approved or required by RIDE.

    * Sustain and engage in partnerships with healthcare professionals, community organizations, industry partners, and postsecondary institutions to enhance career-connected learning opportunities.

    * Promote and support high-quality Work-Based Learning experiences, including internships, job shadowing, mentorships, clinical observations, and capstone projects, in collaboration with CTE staff and the Career Coordinator.

    * Support and promote field trips, guest speakers, demonstrations, and community-based learning experiences aligned with program content and career pathways.

    * Manage student assessments, digital portfolios, credentials, Work-Based Learning documentation, and senior capstone projects. Use student and program data to improve instruction and outcomes.

    * Participate in and support the program’s CTE Advisory Council to promote curriculum relevance, industry alignment, continuous improvement, and compliance with RIDE CTE program-approval requirements.

    * Collaborate with school counselors and staff to support students’ career exploration, postsecondary planning, and Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).

    * Participate in CTE Showcases, recruitment activities, family and community events, and other outreach efforts that promote the program and support enrollment.
