SAIC has an opening for an organized and motivated Mechanical Engineer who is looking to serve as the main mechanical point of contact (POC) for multiple torpedo test equipment modernization and development efforts with the intent of fully leading the individual efforts once enough experience and familiarity with the systems is gained. The candidate will also support smaller R&D electromechanical projects and production-related activities out of our Middletown, RI office.

The ideal candidate should have experience supporting various projects at all levels showcasing leadership qualities and attributes, as well as project management skills. The candidate should have the ability to discuss projects they have supported and/or led. The candidate should be able to self-manage/self-direct projects, and communicate regularly with customers, engineers, logisticians and technicians.

Job Duties:
  • Serve as the main POC for multiple high-profile projects which involve interfacing with the customer to define key test requirements, sourcing and interfacing with multiple suppliers/vendors, establishing all supporting project documentation including analysis of alternatives (AOAs), technical design packages (TDPs), presentations, test requirements and operational results.
  • The candidate will need a broad engineering skill set, well-developed work habits, enthusiasm for the work, the willingness to get hands-on with the projects when required, an eagerness to learn new things, and the ability to work through challenging projects without extensive oversight.
  • The individual will be responsible for leadership throughout the entire project from customer concept to post-test analysis/facility approval. These projects will broadly include the design and fabrication of components and interfaces for electrical and mechanical systems for both test items and facility infrastructure.
  • Technical writing and engineering documentation proficiency is paramount to support the development of TDPs, AOAs, and presentations.
  • The candidate will have to be detail oriented and possess excellent communication skills to work effectively in a cross-disciplinary team and to mentor junior level mechanical engineers on the team.
  • The candidate will routinely interface with different customers through digital means, in-person meetings at the local Naval research center in Newport, and occasionally at various customer sites.
Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and three (3) or more years of experience.
  • Must be proficient in CAD software for the development of 3D models and 2D drawings and templates, preferably Solid Works.

    • Experience developing bills of material (BOMs) for complex assemblies to incorporate on 2D drawings and to use as a costing and tracking tool during projects.
    • Experience creating fabrication drawings, including the use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Formal training is preferred.
    • Knowledge of best design practices to prevent issues during the fabrication phase of the project.
    • Must be highly motivated and have excellent problem-solving skills.
    • Must demonstrate strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently with changing deadlines and priorities.
    • Must be able to work in a customer-facing team environment while completing tasks with limited supervision.
    • Proficiency in technical writing for all forms of project documentation is necessary.
