SATCOM Lab Engineering Technician

Serco is looking for an SATCOM Lab Engineering Technician to work in the Submarine EHF SATCOM Integration Facility (SESIF) at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport/Middletown, RI. Serco supports the US Navy's Military Satellite Communications (MILSATCOM) with NUWC who performs research, design, and development oversight of Navy protected and wideband MILSATCOM systems and associated baseband equipment. NUWC provides technical oversight for the design, development, implementation, integration, and testing of these systems, and provides Integrated Logistics Engineering, including training, operational support, and sustainment of these systems within the Navy platforms to include the end-to-end (E2E) architecture.

You will be part of a small team of technicians that work closely with the customer and other Serco team members to deliver quality support and products. In this role, you will:

  • Provide distance (e.g., telephone, chat, or e-mail) technical assistance in response to Fleet requests received via SubHDR hotline, naval messages (e.g., Casualty Report (CASREP)), or e-mails to resolve hardware/software/logistics/documentation and training issues and shall submit or update NESD Helix system tickets to document issues, recommendations provided, and actions taken to resolve them.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and perform preventative and corrective maintenance on laboratory and facility support equipment and submit or update NIPR or SIPR NESD Helix problem reports to document equipment failures or equipment that is not operating per specifications.
  • Perform Communications Security (COMSEC) and keymat operation by complying with local NUWCDIVNPT COMSEC policies in the performance of their duties as a COMSEC user and shall report completion of any COMSEC user tasking to the lab manager (or alternate) via E-mail.
  • Generate NMT images per satellite access authorizations and EHF Service Plans in support of SESIF and Fleet testing and document image generation is the system logbook.
  • Perform laboratory hardware and software configuration control management.
  • Configure lab and applicable equipment to support test events. Update and maintain laboratory device records (list or database) and prepare and submit laboratory baseline records to the SESIF Work Center Manager.
  • Prepare and submit satellite access requests per Government test requirements and submit post mission after action reports using Joint Integrated SATCOM Tool (JIST).
  • Download and install monthly T-MPSS MPE global scenario updates and perform data item group imports and exports and document the updates.
  • Attend weekly integrated product team meetings on-site, via Flank Speed Teams or SIPRnet Global Video System (GVS) and recommend corrective actions to resolve issues affecting system design, logistics, and system documentation and generate meeting minutes to summarize findings, action items, and decisions made.
  • Perform digital recording element (DRE) data analysis to troubleshoot and isolate terminal, baseband, and satellite problems and prepare and submit technical reports that provide recommendations to resolve any identified problems.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • An Active Secret clearance
  • U.S Citizenship
  • A Bachelor's Degree or a High School Diploma/GED and minimum 14 years of experience in a related field
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a related field
  • Technical knowledge of SATCOM and SESIF SATCOM Equipment (e.g., NMT, ATIP)
  • Knowledge of general test equipment, special purpose equipment, mast, and system types to perform troubleshooting, test equipment set up and operation, repair, and configuration management for overall program level support
  • Effective interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills to promptly respond to requests for technical support
  • Ability to assess and respond to situations where standard procedures have failed in isolating or fixing problem equipment
  • Ability to travel up to 10%
