Job Description

TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER (EI), ELEMENTARY

SALARY RANGE: $47,547-$102,907 (salary protection available)

REQUIRED: Applicants must hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in the following area:
Emotional Impairment (SE).

JOB SUMMARY: Instruct students in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth in the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible citizens.

REPORTS TO: Building Administration and/or Superintendent

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As per the current Midland City Education Association (MCEA) Agreement

EVALUATION: As per the current Midland City Education Association (MCEA) Agreement

Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent
    • Must possess valid teaching certification with appropriate endorsement for subject area.
    • Properly Placed (previously HQ) with required endorsements as determined by district assignment
    • Additional education/training in specific area may be required depending on assignment
  • Physical and mental stamina required for teaching
  • Demonstrated Technical

    Skills:
    • Computer knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, and other basic computer skills
    • Familiarity with student information systems
    • Possess computer competency and familiarity with emerging technologies
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Sound independent judgment, including handling of confidential matters
  • Knowledge of best practice strategies; able to make research-based decisions
  • Ability to collect and analyze data to assess student achievement
  • Stipulation of differentiated instruction for students
  • Effective communication with parents, staff, and students, verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain an orderly classroom environment
  • Pass background check
Qualifications Specific to Special Education Teaching Positions
  • Working knowledge of IEP and Special Education documentation:
    • Ability to manage special education caseload, including conducting IEPT meetings
    • Ability to complete IEP forms and monitor compliance in accordance with IDEA and MARSE rules
  • Ability to collect and analyze data to assess student achievement:
    • Provide differentiated instruction for students and make accommodations based on individual student data
    • Identify and incorporate strategic and intensive interventions based on individual data
  • Ability to work with special needs students in an inclusive setting
Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with instructional staff, parents, and community resources
  • Demonstrate differentiated methods to meet classroom assignments
  • Instruct students to improve academic success
  • Manage student behavior for a safe learning environment
  • Monitor students in various educational environments
  • Participate in meetings and professional development activities
  • Prepare written materials documenting student progress
  • Maintain accurate records per law, policy, and regulations
  • Use tools to assess growth and provide progress reports
  • Accommodate learning disabilities of students with aid of district specialists
  • Participate in co-teaching situations as assigned
  • Support other classroom teachers with curriculum implementation
  • Direct student teachers, support staff, and volunteers
  • Encourage students to set standards of classroom behavior
  • Report incidents per state law and board policies
  • Respond to emergency situations
  • Respond to inquiries from various sources
  • Ensure predictable, reliable attendance
  • Fine motor skills and ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Able to stand or sit for long periods
  • Able to ride in a vehicle as necessary
  • Able to work indoors and outdoors during all seasons
  • May require travel to offsite teaching location(s)
