The desired result of the Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) intervention is to safely transport high risk patient populations and those requiring mobile intensive care and treatment above and beyond the scope of practice of a paramedic on an Advance Life Support (ALS) ambulance.

Responsibilities

(25%) The CCP will be expected to manage high acuity patients during inter-facility transfers. Once the criteria is met to designate the transfer as a Mobile Intensive Care (MICU) or Specialty Care Transport (SCT), the CCP will be mobilized. The CCP will be expected to manage these patients during transit to the receiving facility. The CCP will be expected to be proficient in the administration of blood products, vasoactive drugs, paralytics, induction agents, interpret arterial blood gases (ABG’s), manage ventilator dependent patients, manage invasive monitoring devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella devices, left ventricular assist devices, and more.

(25%) Due to the highly specialized nature of the patients the CCP will be expected to manage, extensive training and continuing education will be required to ensure proficiency in their duties. This shall include but is not limited to:
Maintaining the designated FP-C or CCP-C certification and following all four‑year renewal cycle requirements and an additional 100 continuing education hours. Maintain additional certifications above that of the Paramedic including Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and Pre‑Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).
