Summary

This position will provide continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients and alert floor staff of any behaviors requiring intervention.

Responsibilities
  • Maintains visual observation of patient(s) at all times. Verbally redirects patient(s) from engaging in any at‑risk behaviors. If this is not successful, incumbents will summon floor staff to assist. Provides floor staff with information in a timely fashion regarding patient safety issues, particularly when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others. Participates in the collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues in accordance with policies and procedures.

    Collaborates with co‑workers to create a safe environment for patients. Seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from the room and reports findings to appropriate staff members. The two‑person team alternates video monitoring with on the unit patient rounding to validate remote monitoring safety measures in person. The rounder additionally eliminates adverse events and allows staff to feel supported in the care of a virtually monitored patient.

    Supplemental rounding will be performed with intentions to decrease events specifically with high falls risk patients.
  • Answers patient questions within scope of practice and directs other questions to appropriate floor staff.
  • Participates in shift report with incoming staff. Reviews pertinent patient information and behaviors.
  • Maintains patient dignity and privacy. Provides excellent customer service:
    Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times.
  • Supports the mission, goals, policies and standards of nursing.

Medical Center and unit policies and work rules are recognized, supported and implemented.

Certifications and Licensures
  • BLS:
    Basic Life Support (equivalent experience within 3 months of hire or transfer; qualification source: AHA)
  • PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification (must hold an internal Mid Michigan Health Patient Care Technician certification or a current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification culminating in licensure in the state of Michigan or completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan;

    also accepts Medical Assistant credentials such as RMA, CMA, CCMA; for current PCTs with expired CNA/EMT/LPN, opportunity to achieve internal certification)
  • Team Advanced:
    Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (equivalent experience within 6 months of hire or transfer; employees on or before 12/31/2023 have 24 months to complete this certification; qualification source: unspecified)

Required Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience, Training and Skills
  • Knowledge of reading, writing, math, and computer skills.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows; may be required to participate in further learning opportunities offered by My Michigan Health.
Physical and Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required.
  • Mobility: able to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device; able to perform job functions as outlined.
  • Vision and hearing necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk for long periods of time; may require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling; repetitive movements on a regular to frequent basis.
  • Physical demand level: medium; must be able to occasionally lift or carry 15–20 lbs.
