SummaryThis position, independently or in consultation with a physician, administers medications, performs various types of therapeutic modalities and diagnostic testing for the cardio‑pulmonary system, responds to arrest and emergency situations, and provides CPR and life‑support systems.
Responsibilities- Perform respiratory care to evaluate and treat protocol evaluations (25%).
- Deliver medications via aerosol and metered‑dose inhalers (25%).
- Respond immediately to all Rapid Responses, arrest or STAT situations, maintaining artificial airways, respiration, and cardiac compressions (25%).
- Set up and maintain all oxygen according to protocol (25%).
- Manage the physiological and mechanical aspects of a patient that requires life support.
- Wean patients off the ventilator.
- Perform chest physiotherapy and airway clearance.
- Assess patient to recommend appropriate therapy.
- Perform special procedures for diagnostic and therapeutic reasons, including PFT, bronchoscopy, arterial blood gas sampling, EKGs, Holter monitoring, and oximetry.
- Provide supplemental oxygen throughout the hospital and maintain/replace equipment.
- Maintain inpatient charts and clarify physician orders for the department.
- Perform chart auditing and participate in the quality assurance program.
- Assist in orientation of new employees.
- Demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows.
- Participate in further learning opportunities offered by My Michigan Health, if required.
- ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Required Equivalent
Experience:
12 months of hire). - BLS – Basic Life Support (Required Equivalent Experience upon hire).
- NBRC – National Board Respiratory Care (employees who earned credentials before July 1 2002 are not required to recertify).
- NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation (Required Equivalent Experience with in 12 months of hire).
- PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support (Required Equivalent Experience with in 12 months of hire).
- RT – Licensed Respiratory Therapist (Required Equivalent Experience).
- TEAM ADVANCED – Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (Required Equivalent Experience with in 6 months of hire).
Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy or a related field. If the RTT credential was earned on or before July 1 2004, an Associate’s Degree is not required. Maintain CEUs for license. Minimum two (2) years of clinical experience in a medical center or similar setting.
Experience, Training and Skills- Graduate of a school of Respiratory Therapy with at least a 2‑year Associate’s Degree (exceptions noted).
- Current State of Michigan License in Respiratory Care required.
- Current Basic Life Support required upon hire.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required within 12 months of hire.
- Ability to troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment (ventilators, ABG analyzers, etc.).
- Interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups at all levels.
- Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
Must be able to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device and perform the functions of the job as outlined.
Overall vision and hearing necessary with or without assistance.
Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods; may need stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; must follow My Michigan Health blood‑borne pathogen protocol.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and stay awake.
Overall dexterity required including handling, reaching, grasping; may require repetitive motions.
Physical Demand Level: Medium. Able to lift or carry 21‑50 lbs 0‑33% of the workday, 20 lbs 34‑66% of the day, and 10 lbs or less 67‑100% of the day; walk/stand/push/pull as needed.
