Summary

Responsible for assigning patient beds to facilitate movement of patients requiring a hospital stay from various departments (Emergency Department, PACU, etc.) to appropriate units across My Michigan Health medical centers. Collaborate with unit clerks, nurses, nursing supervision, and the Transfer Coordinator RN to ensure timely placement according to physician orders and Bed Planning policy.

Responsibilities
  • 50% Assigns patients being admitted to any My Michigan Health medical center using Bed Planning policy and physician orders; receives direction from the Transfer Coordinator RN and nursing supervision.
  • 25% Completes necessary processes in the electronic medical record (EMR) to ensure accurate patient transfer.
  • 15% Provides customer service to hospitals/physicians or patients wishing to transfer to My Michigan Health facilities.
  • 10% Assists with transfer processes under direction of the Transfer Coordinator RN and refers clinical questions to RN or Patient Placement nursing leadership.
  • Performs tasks on computer, answers phone calls with exemplary customer service skills, and educates staff/physicians on the placement process as needed.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One-year minimum acute care experience.
  • Healthcare/Medical terminology experience from clinical setting or course completion.
  • Computer knowledge, especially proficiency in Microsoft Windows.
  • Ability to communicate successfully with physicians, patients, family members, and staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Willingness to participate in further learning opportunities offered by My Michigan Health.
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including latex or appropriate substitutes.
  • Ability to move freely; able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; may be required to perform frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Capacity to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and stay alert.
  • Dexterity for handling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive movements; may require frequent repetition.
  • Light physical demand level: occasional lifting of 11‑20 lbs.; frequent lifting of 10 lbs.; walking, standing, pushing, pulling arm/leg controls.
  • Compliance with blood borne pathogen and tuberculosis testing requirements.
