Registered Nurse RN- Medical Oncology

Summary

The medical oncology unit will consist of patients with a cancer diagnosis, medical step‑down patients, and general medical overflow. This position requires basic knowledge of the pathophysiology of cancer and the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients on this unit.

• (30%) Regularly assess patients/clients' needs and provide skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care and accepted standards of nursing practice.
• (30%) Provide direct patient care, including nursing assessment, medication administration, treatments, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, etc.
• (20%) Evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment plan and patients' condition to make suggestions and participate in updating or revising the plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information and assessments to improve patient care.
• (10%) Process physician/provider orders and perform physician‑ordered care accurately, completely, and in a timely manner.
• (10%) Follow up regarding medication changes and order clarifications.
• Other duties and responsibilities:
  • Interpret information and report pertinent data to the physician, including pertinent clinical information.
  • Assess learning needs considering readiness, ability, preferences, and cultural/spiritual variables.
  • Provide education to meet individual learning needs and abilities.
  • Participate in care conferences as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain good working rapport with interdisciplinary personnel to meet each patient's needs.
  • Coordinate care provided by patient care technicians.
  • Organize and prioritize the needs of groups of patients or an individual patient.
  • Manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit.
  • Instruct other team members when appropriate, explaining goals and rationale for individualized care.
  • Implement clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Utilize and understand clinical pathways appropriately.
  • Remain calm and efficient when working in stressful situations.
  • Document accurately, clearly, and concisely, including pertinent clinical data.
  • Share information and report significant changes or abnormal findings to appropriate team members.
  • Participate in regulatory surveys.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Assist with orientation and ongoing competencies.
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for patient care.
  • Attend and participate in professional association activities and programs to stay current on regulations, guidelines, and professional standards.
  • Remain current on new developments by reading professional journals and attending seminars.
  • Understand role in emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Administer cardiac drips and chemotherapy per provider orders.
  • Assess patients for signs or symptoms of complications of cancer or treatment protocols.
  • Accurately use central lines for drawing blood, administering chemotherapy, etc.
  • Interact positively with patients and families during severe stress situations.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and integration of theory to practice for medical, oncology, medical step‑down, telemetry, and other patients.
  • Participate in the Transition of Care course for the first 12 months after hire or transfer to the position.

• RN:
  Registered Nurse (essential certification)
• BLS:
  Basic Life Support (essential, must be within 3 months of hire or transfer)
• DIMC:
  Dysrhythmia Interpretation Monitor (essential, employees hired after Jan 1, 2025 must complete within 12 months)
• ACLS:
  Advanced Cardiac Life Support (essential, within 6 months of hire or transfer; if hired before Dec 31, 2023, 24 months to complete)
• TEAM ADVANCED:
  Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (essential, within 6 months of hire or transfer; if hired before Dec 31, 2023, 24 months to complete)
• ONS BIOCRT: ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Bio Certificate (essential, required within 12 months of hire or transfer, must be renewed every 24 months)

Associate’s degree in nursing;
Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
